Position Definition: Performs skilled electrical work in diagnosing, installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical equipment, electrical systems, and electrical control systems and general maintenance work as needed.
General Duties: Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions in electrical equipment or control systems such as boilers, pumps, motors, generators, air compressors, fire alarms, dryers, refrigerators, overhead doors, electrical equipment on bridges or other electrical devices. Troubleshoots, systems which include some electronics. Installs lighting fixtures, power outlets, control devices, heaters, thermostats, computer cables or cathodic protection equipment. Runs conduit and pulls wire for new and/or existing electrical installations. Modifies or rewires existing electrical installations. Conducts preventative maintenance on electrical and electronic equipment. Purchases and/or orders electrical supplies or parts from vendors, warehouse, or distributors. Reviews blueprints, electrical schematics, project plans and specifications for electrical equipment installations. Replaces fuses, changes lamps in fluorescent mercury vapor and incandescent lighting fixtures. Installs temporary power systems for special events.
Additional Duties: Assists in emergency maintenance operations. Performs necessary emergency work outside regular working hours, when required.
Supervised By: Receives general supervision from the Superintendent of Public Property and Parks or designated supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of methods, practices and procedures used in the electrical trade. Knowledge of the function and operation of electrical systems, equipment, and controls. Knowledge of the National Electric Code and OSHA requirements relating to electric trade. Ability to work from plans, specifications, and blueprints. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to describe in writing any repair or maintenance problems. Ability to estimate work to include time and materials. Ability to use common electrical tools and equipment. Ability to wire and repair high and low voltage electrical equipment and systems. Ability to rig and work on scaffolds, ladders, lifts at high elevations.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from High School or a GED and a valid State of Connecticut E-1 Unlimited Electrical Contractor License.
License or Certification: Possession of a current E-1 Unlimited Electrical Contractor License issued by the State of Connecticut. Valid Motor Vehicle License.
This position is a Grade 10.
