The City of Norcross is looking for a Roads and Stormwater Part-time Light Equipment Operator . The purpose of this position is to provide essential support for daily public works projects focused on maintaining and improving city infrastructure. The incumbent in this position will assist with street cleaning, stormwater system maintenance, and the repair of streets, drainage ditches, sidewalks, and street signs. Additional responsibilities include right-of-way mowing, tree limb trimming, and addressing erosion issues through tasks such as spreading riprap and repairing stormwater pipes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares trenches and installs stormwater and drainage pipe.
  • Performs repairs on streets and drainage ditches.
  • Cleans and maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment as required.
  • Stabilizes banks, creeks, and ditches; corrects erosion issues.
  • Repairs and installs street signs as needed.
  • Jets and cleans stormwater infrastructure including storm pipes, manholes, and catch basins.
  • Assists other departmental crews with various maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Supports cleaning and jetting of stormwater systems such as manholes, curbs, gutters, and street surfaces.
  • Assists with concrete repairs to manholes and sidewalks.
  • Assists in street cleaning, including curbs, gutters, and roadway surfaces.
  • Assists in cutting and trimming vegetation along roadways and rights-of-way.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED and one to three years of experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Part 382 - Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy.
  • Possession of a valid Georgia Driver's License for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • A valid Commercial Drivers License is preferred.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Any other duties as assigned by the Roads and Stormwater Superintendent. Ability to be on-call and respond quickly to emergencies and requests from management.

The position has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and routines is high. Errors in judgment will waste resources and adversely impact performance. The Incumbent operates independently but work is verified. The content of work priorities is determined by supervision. Successful performance helps ensure safe and attractive streets and a positive public image for the city.

Communications/Customer Contact:

Contact is typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public. The nature of the interaction is generally to provide and/or exchange information and provide services.

Competencies:

  • Proficient in the operation of small equipment, including chainsaws, weed eaters, hand tools, lawn mowers, tampers, and pressure washers.
  • Skilled in the use of manual tools such as shovels, picks, hammers, and wrenches.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers.
  • Competent in performing street repairs and basic infrastructure maintenance.
  • Capable of safely operating equipment such as dump trucks and commercial-grade lawn mowers.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions accurately and efficiently.
