For more information about this position and our competitive pay, benefits package and pension plan, refer to this job posting or our City website at This is skilled work in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered fire rescue apparatus, equipment and vehicles. Employees in this class are responsible for the journey-level repair of a wide variety of fire rescue apparatus, equipment and vehicles. Work involves the overhaul and troubleshooting of standard and specialized engines, air conditioning and electrical systems, suspensions and portable complex electrical generation equipment. Employees exercise a significant degree of independent judgment in determining method of repair following receipt of oral or written work orders. Work is inspected while in progress and/or record of equipment services are reviewed to determine degree of employee performance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs maintenance, repair and replacement of a variety of firefighting and rescue equipment, including but not limited to: valves, water governors, nozzles, foam systems, acetylene torches, fire pumps, brake retarders and related hardware, breathing air systems and air compressors.
  • Performs overhaul, maintenance and repair work on firefighting apparatus equipment, gasoline and diesel motors.
  • Inspects, adjusts and replaces valves, pistons, bearings, cooling, fuel, ignition and exhaust systems; tunes motors using electronic-analysis equipment.
  • Overhauls and services hydraulic and vacuum controls and components, including reading and interpreting hydraulic and electric schematics.
  • Operates service vehicles and tow trucks; performs on-road service on disabled vehicles.
  • Diagnoses suspension problems; sets steering to factory specifications.
  • Road-tests equipment following repairs.
  • Performs testing of fire pumps for ISO (Insurance Service Office) certifications.
  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Required:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent, plus three (3) years experience as a mechanic at the journey level, and at least six (6) months experience in the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus or heavy duty equipment. Must complete ASE master truck certification within one (1) year from date of employment. Must complete one (1) Level EVT certification within three (3) years from date of employment. Possession of a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's license class "B", within six (6) months from date of hire.

Preferred:
Five (5) years experience as a mechanic at the journey level, and at least one (1) year experience in the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus or heavy duty equipment. Possession of ASE master truck certification and possession of a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's license class "B".

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS :
  • ASE master truck certification within one (1) year from date of employment.
  • One (1) Level EVT certification within three (3) years from date of employment.
  • Valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License Class "B" within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Valid Driver's License: With proof of automobile insurance
  • Background Check: Must have an acceptable background record
  • Driving Abstract: Must have an acceptable driving record
KKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of the standard practices and equipment of the fire rescue apparatus profession.
  • Knowledge of the operation of gasoline and heavy diesel engines and of mechanical repair of a wide range of fire and rescue apparatus, equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the trade.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, air and electronic fire rescue apparatus, equipment and vehicle systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and parts to specific repair and adjustment work; like welding (heliare and stick), basic metal and tool fabrication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and superiors.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of specialized tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Skill in trouble shooting and adjusting defects in fire rescue apparatus, equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to kneel, lift, walk, sit, write, hear, speak, make rational decisions and be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move heavy objects. May require the use of fingers or hands to manipulate objects such as picking, gripping, or pressing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral, and depth perception. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in a primarily outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals and other hazards. This position works in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to my co-workers or others.

Repeated participation in any examination for which the same test is used is limited to once every 6 months. Your examination results will be sent by email as soon as possible after the grading is completed.

Final passing grades are used to determine a candidate's position on the eligibility list of successful candidates. Departments fill vacancies from this list. The top three names are considered for each vacancy unless otherwise modified. Those not appointed are returned to the eligibility list for further consideration in accordance with the Civil Service Ordinance. Your name will remain on a register for one year for open competitive examinations and two years for closed competitive except where labor contract conflicts.

Your name may be removed from an eligibility list prior to one year according to Hollywood's Civil Service Ordinance or labor contracts.
