SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Chief Electrician, this position serves as a technician for an electrical maintenance crew in the water and wastewater facilities. Performs and directs the work of others in skilled and complex electrical installations and repairs; oversees and maintains electrical equipment at the water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and well fields; works with contractors on electrical projects; and occasionally assists other departments with their electrical needs. Position must be available to work callbacks, evenings, weekends, holidays and during inclement weather. Position is considered weather essential personnel.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as examples of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment expected of the position.

  • Performs the scheduled preventative maintenance, unscheduled routine and emergency installation, troubleshooting, and repair and correction of electrical problems effecting the buildings and equipment in the water and wastewater facilities, as assigned by the Chief Electrician.
  • On occasions perform installation and bending of EMT and Rigid conduit, pulling wire, and wiring / unwiring electrical components and devices.
  • Maintains and coordinates daily work schedules to meet goals.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs 480v & 2300v switchgear, motor control systems, power systems and emergency power systems.
  • Performs scheduled, unscheduled and emergency installations and corrections of electrical issues affecting the buildings and equipment in facilities, as assigned by the Chief Electrician.
  • Works within the parameters of an overall work schedule and keeps the Chief Electrician informed of any delays in the schedule caused by frequent unscheduled and/or emergency requests for his/her time.
  • Plans and implements various installations and daily repair projects, to include ordering parts, arranging for tools and equipment and coordinating the project with other work being done and with operational schedules.
  • Assists in keeping the necessary inventory levels of parts, supplies and tools required to properly install, troubleshoot and document all wiring and components.
  • Maintains the written records relevant to this position, consisting of daily job and progress reports, upgrades to blueprints, ladder diagrams and schematics.
  • Occasionally, may assist other departments with their electrical needs.
  • May acts as lead technician and assists the Electrician I and other personnel assigned to the electrical maintenance crew with predictive and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical and control systems. Including running conduit, pulling wire and component replacement.
  • Plans and organizes electrical and control system projects to maximize efficient use of labor and materials.
  • Prepares reports for planned and completed projects.
  • Emphasizes and provides for safe working conditions for electrical and non electrical personnel.
  • Communicates with contactors as they work on electrical projects at the treatment plant, well field, and pump stations.
  • During the absence of Chief Electrician communicates with Utilities Maintenance Manager on electrical projects at the treatment plants, well fields, and pump stations.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Chief Electrician.
  • Maintains and coordinates asset management and schedules timely work order assignments. Communicates daily with other staff to coordinate quick responses to open and closed work orders, preventative maintenance, and inspections.
  • Emphasizes and provides for safe working conditions for electrical and non-electrical personnel.
  • Must communicate with operations staff daily and keep them informed of the status of electrically powered equipment before during and after the work is performed
  • Must perform before and after use checks of vehicles and equipment
  • Must wear and maintain all required personal protective equipment and perform safety evaluations for job sites including proper use of a lockout/tag out system.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and maintain a valid Texas Driver's License for all positions. A Texas CDL is preferred. Experience in an electrical trade and/or industrial maintenance with an Apprentice Electrician License. Class ladder adjustments will require above average scoring on performance appraisals.

TRD915- Entry level with minimal experience in electrical trade and/or industrial electrical maintenance. Texas State issued Electrical Apprentice License is required.

TRD060-Texas State Journeyman license . Requires 7,000 completed and documented hours of on-the job training under the supervision of a Master Electrician licensed in Texas. Can install, maintain and/or extend electrical wiring systems and/or appurtenances, apparatus with connection to electrical energy. National electrical code awareness and training. Understanding of City of Amarillo lock Out Tag Out policy and Electrical code procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • All safety equipment necessary for safe work performance and to maintain a safe working environment. Including the ability to follow Lockout Tagout procedures.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand tools, precision measurement tools, such as Multimeters, Meggers, and other troubleshooting equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform necessary emergency repairs in stressful situation while doing so in safe and productive manner.
  • Ability to occasionally work around potentially hazardous chemicals and frequently work around and with moving equipment and potentially hazardous energy sources, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical, up to 4,160v under the supervision of the Chief Electrician.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting in addition to working productively under minimal supervision
  • Knowledge and understanding of blueprints, specifications, schematics, O&M manuals.
  • Ability to operate bucket trucks,
  • Have knowledge of motor control systems operations, power systems operations, and lighting system
  • Skillful in the safe operation of powered electrical conduit threaders, cutters, benders, and wire pulling equipment.
  • Knowledge of various types of motor control components.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical circuit diagrams.
  • Proficiency with reading/writing for accurate communication and transference of information; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to supervise a team of electricians on the job site in the performance of their duties.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, including but not limited to Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Shall be able to climb ladders, stairs, perform work at elevated heights, and can stand on concrete for long periods of time.
  • Will be required to work in confined spaces such as vaults to perform repairs
  • Must be willing and able to work in environments where raw sewage is present
  • Required to climb overhead water storage tower 100ft to perform maintenance

WORK ENVIRONMENT

There may be exposure to extreme weather conditions, chemical substances, noise, physical hazards, vibrations, confined spaces, respiratory hazards, and extreme heights. Attendance is an essential function of this position and in the event of an emergency or during inclement weather this position will be required to work to perform essential services. This position is required to work overtime. Will be required to work in environments where raw sewage is present.
