Job Description
Title: Superintendent of Fire Alarms
Department: Fire Department
Nature of work: Duties shall include, but are not limited to, all
activities related to ensuring the efficient
and reliable operation of the municipal fire alarm system and related
components, including emergency
repairs, planning, and routine maintenance and testing. May also perform
firefighting, rescue and
emergency duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday Friday / 40 hours per week.
May also require after workday hours, weekend hours, emergency scenes,
often without advanced
notice.
Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the Fire Chief
and/or Asst. Fire Chief while
exercising initiative and independent action within a framework of
rules, regulations and policies. May
receive general directions from the Director of Public Works or their
designee in work related to traffic
signals.
Supervision Exercised: Exercises supervision over fire department
personnel assigned to the Fire Alarm
division and exercises supervision over other fire service personnel
when delegated such responsibility
by the Fire Chief or Assistant Fire Chief in emergency situations.
Essential Responsibilities:
Performs highly skilled technical work involving the installation,
maintenance, and operation of
Fire Department electrical, electronic, and mechanical fire alarm
equipment.
Provides installation or coordination of general maintenance on all fire
department
communications equipment to include but not limited to vehicle radios,
portable radios,
monitors, pagers, sirens, warning lights and telephone equipment. Writes
specifications and
provides guidance for purchase of same.
Designs and maintains fire department communications system
infrastructure.
Must be fully qualified to operate a lift truck in relation to all
duties.
Designated as the Town of Brattleboro Emergency Management
Communications Officer.
Develop/maintain a filing and recording system for all fire alarm
circuits, boxes, inspections,
tests, maintenance and any other information pertinent to the Fire Alarm
division.
Supervises and participates in the installation and maintenance of
municipal fire alarm lines and
equipment.
Works with the Fire Prevention Division to provide guidance for
industrial and commercial
establishments in the installation of private fire alarm systems.
Works with the Fire Prevention Division with the installation and
control of locking key boxes to
ensure emergency access for the fire department at all buildings
protected by a fire alarm
system.
Connects private fire alarm systems into the municipal fire alarm
system.
Provides repair and maintenance of Town of Brattleboro traffic signals
to include minor

installation work and emergency repairs.
Responds to emergencies as necessary when off duty.
On the call back and shift fill rotation, occasionally will work on a
shift as needed when
minimum staffing is short.
Works with the Central Dispatch supervisor to ensure the Fire
Departments and the
municipalitys communications equipment is maintained.
Non-Essential Duties and Tasks: The responsibilities and duties listed
above are examples of the various

exclude them from the position if the
work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
Competencies Needed:
We will consider any combination of relevant work experience,
volunteering, education and transferable skills a
qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.
Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school
supplemented by approved
courses relating to the technology of fire alarm systems, communications
systems, and traffic
signals or any combination of schooling and equivalent experience.
Four to six years experience in the operation, installation, and repair
of electrical, electronic,
mechanical, alarm and communications equipment.
Must have a minimum of a State of VT FF1 certification and Emergency
Medical Technician (EMT)
or equivalent and a valid motor vehicle license.
Must hold or be able to obtain the International Municipal Signal
Association (IMSA) Level 1 & 2
