Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Multiple Positions), Tesla, Inc., Austin, TX:
Perform mechanical design and packaging of HVAC components, pumps, valves, hoses, fittings and quick connectors to meet system and vehicle requirements. Ideate and develop novel solutions that advance the industry state of the art when required. Optimize designs for efficiency, cost, weight, manufacturability, and serviceability. Develop and optimize designs in 3D CAD software with associated CAE tools. Complete and release component designs and documentation, including 2D drawings, component DFMEA, specifications, and other technical design documents. Resolve issues and concerns with cross-functional teams including engineering, firmware, supply chain, production, and service. Lead work across boundaries to identify unique solutions with all stake holders to advance state of the art. Lead the sourcing of suppliers and manage their relationships to develop new parts and processes and ensure timely program deliverables within budget. Develop and execute component and subsystem design and production validation plans and test methods to validate produce adherence to requirements. Ensure vehicles conform to all motor vehicle safety standards governing HVAC operation. Support vehicle programs through the entire life cycle, including specification development, prototype builds, vehicle tests, production, warranty, and continuous improvement. Work closely with the Quality, Service, Manufacturing, Validation, and Purchasing organizations, as well as external suppliers, to design outstanding vehicles. Continuously improve our systems reliability by using real-world data to improve testing and specifications for future products.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, and 3 years of work experience. Alternatively, will accept a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, and 2 years of work experience.
Must have 2 years of experience working with industrial fluid systems.
Must have 2 years of experience designing fluid seals and interconnects in an automotive or industrial environment.
Must have 2 years of experience interpreting and developing Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
Must have 2 years of experience with 3D CAD modeling.
Must have 2 years of experience creating 2D drawings, and 1D models.
Must have 2 years of experience performing hand calculations to support design direction.
Must have 2 years of experience with Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
Must have 2 years of experience with rapid prototyping, quantitative decision making, and first principles analysis for problem solving.
Requires domestic travel up to 5% and international travel up to 5%, in order to validate suppliers and visit testing sites.
