Position Summary

The State Freeway Operations Engineer has the primary responsibility of promoting, planning for, integrating and implementing advanced traffic operations concepts, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology and procedures and active traffic management concepts into Traffic Management Center control room operations, freeway operations and regional improvement projects. This position works with region traffic and project development engineers to integrate advanced traffic operations concepts into regional operations.

This position maintains knowledge of freeway operations in other states and their effectiveness. This position integrates freeway operations concepts into existing freeway corridors to maximize freeway operations. This position develops policy related to freeway operations into the planning process and deployment.

Salary Information

The Senior level position is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $80,870 - $99,403 depending upon qualifications and experience.

The Advanced level position is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $90,064 - $108,950 depending on qualifications and experience. The Advanced level also receives up to an additional $2,080/year for having your Professional Engineering license.

WisDOT also offers excellent benefits. A twelve-month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

For permanent positions that allow remote work flexibility, it is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions may need to report to office locations in Wisconsin on short notice.

Qualifications

A minimally qualified Senior candidate will have the following:

  • Upon hire, candidate must have graduated from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) ABET accredited college or university with a 4-year bachelor's degree (or Master's or PH.D.) in engineering OR have graduated from an Engineer Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) accredited college AND hold an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • At least 4 years of professional engineering experience after receiving degree from an ABET accredited University in design, construction or maintenance of transportation structures.

Additionally, a qualified Advanced candidate will have the above experience as well as:

  • A valid Professional Engineering registration and be able to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
