Full Time - General Maintenance Equipment Operator

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision, performs a variety of skilled and manual duties in the inspection, installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution system facilities and equipment; assists in maintenance tasks related to the water distribution system. Work is usually performed in a crew, although an employee may work independently on an assigned basis. Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and tools.

ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repair, construction, maintenance, and inspection of the water distribution system tasks in accordance with accepted practices and procedures.
  • Performs manual work associated with installation, maintenance, and repair of water utility lines; determines source of water leaks and makes necessary repairs; lays/installs water mains and service lines; repairs water mains, water service lines, and service leaks, installs and repairs fire hydrants; and locates underground utility mains/lines.
  • Performs ground excavation work, mixes, rakes, and spread asphalt, and patches and/or repairs excavations.
  • Installs, reads, and repairs water meters and related mechanisms, including AMI infrastructure.
  • Provides customer service; responds to questions or complaints involving water line breaks, potential high consumption, or other issues; investigates customer complaints and researches problems; initiates appropriate action to ensure problem resolution.
  • Excavate concrete, pavement, and direct and set up concrete forms as necessary, and backfill open tranches and complete surfaces "to-finish" as appropriate; remove and apply paint and other coatings to water facilities and equipment.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including backhoe, front-end loader, dump truck, or vactor truck; routinely inspects and performs minor maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment; removes and replaces defective parts.
  • Inspects equipment, refuels vehicles, checks fluid levels, replaces fluids, greases equipment, washes/cleans equipment, or cleans work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Set up traffic control including signs and barricades and direct traffic around work sites.
  • May use a computer to enter and retrieve information related to work assignments and record-keeping.
  • Notify customers of water main shutdowns.
  • Keeps records related to work, materials, and maintenance activities, including confined space entry.
  • Operating characteristics and requirements of water distribution system
  • Solve complex problems and work effectively under time constraints and pressure.
  • Perform job duties with proper safety work methods and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the both the public and other City employees.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and the ability to understands and accurately follow oral, verbal, and written instructions.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to effectively to meet day-to-day operational deadlines.
  • Respond to public works emergencies, including those which occur outside of normal business hours.
  • Read and interpret maps and drawings used in locating valves, mains, and service lines.
  • Follow established safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
  • Perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver's License, plus CDL, Class B, with an N endorsement. If not in possession at time of job award, must obtain within (4) months of job award.
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Michigan, Drinking Water Operator Distribution Certification level S-3. If not in possession at time of job award, must obtain within 36 months of job award.
  • Must possess and maintain Training certification for front-end loader, backhoe and forklift. If not in possession at time of job award, must obtain within (6) six months of job award.
  • Other pertinent licensing or safety training required by management
  • Must have and wear protective footwear. Footwear must provide toe protection and be certified as meeting ASTM F2413-18 Standards for impact and compression resistance, and puncture resistance. Must cover employee's ankle and be a minimum of a 6 inch boot.
