Duties

As the Plumber, you will be performing the following duties:

  • Lays out and plans the modification and installation of air, gas, and high temperature water systems using blueprints, sketched and floorplans. Sets up system routes, places and cuts route openings, places hangers for proper pitch and elevation and installs parts such as regulators, valve, expansion joints, gauges and pumps.

  • Repairs and maintains piping and related systems containing heating system hot water, domestic hot and cold water, chilled water, sanitary and sewer drain lines and sprinkler irrigation systems. Repairs, reconditions, and install various types of valves used in the Gallery's heating and plumbing and air conditioning systems, such as strainers, check valves, relief valves, floats, pressure reducing stations, gate valves, coils, and steam valves expansion tanks and condensate lines. Repairs, reconditions, maintains and installs pump accessories, restroom fixtures, specialty sinks, water fountains, water closets, center sets, lavatories, wall and floor mounted urinals, showers, ice-machines, sewage ejection pots/pits and drain lines. Test and initiates repairs to various valves such as check valves, gate valves and backflow preventer. Cuts and threads brass, black and galvanized pipe. Solder or brazes brass or copper pipe using oxygen/ acetylene equipment. Clear blockages in the sanitary and storm sewage systems. Adjust and maintain steam pressure reducing stations ranging form 250 to 5 pounds per square inch gauge (PSIG). Maintains and repairs plumbing and irrigation systems and associated equipment.

  • Install entirely new plumbing systems for staff and public facilities as required. Install, modifies and repairs high temperature hot water heating coils, balancing valves, strainer, shut off valves, regulating valves, storage tanks, expansion tanks and make-up feeders.

  • Incumbent is responsible for the tracing of hard-to-locate defects or problems and completing repairs, modifications, installations and maintenance of steam water and sewage systems with little or no advice.

  • Ability to read blueprints and drawings in order to lay out and plan the installation or modification of piping and utility systems; also contributes to the development of those blueprints and drawings by collaborating with engineers and others responsible for them.

  • Must possess skill required to measure, cut, thread and install to specified lengths and angels.

  • Responsible for selecting proper tools, deciding correct method and techniques to use to complete assigned work with little check during its progress.

  • Makes regular inspections of equipment associated with plumbing, sprinkler systems, heating fixtures, storm drain systems, sanitary sewage systems, domestic hot water tank, domestic potable water, backflow preventers, and water coolers in the Gallery, Sculpture Garden and greenhouses. Makes inspections of plumbing fixtures, steam piping and equipment in the building to determine if they are functioning properly and safely.

        Requires rotating shifts. Position requires extensive walking, standing, bending, reaching, and climbing stairs and ladders. Requires heavy lifting. Work is performed in cramped, isolated locations that are difficult to access, as well as hot, humid and dusty spaces. Some work is performed outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to chemicals and chemical vapors, and may have to don protective clothing and equipment.
