Job Overview

The Civil Estimator will play a critical role in the preconstruction phase by accurately estimating project costs and preparing bid proposals. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in civil construction, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities

The list below is not an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities. This professional in this role will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by the position's changing role within the organization and the overall business objectives of the organization.

  • Drawing and Specification Analysis: Review and analyze drawings, specifications, proposals, and related documentation to perform quantity surveys and data input for project estimates.
  • Quantity Take-Offs: Perform detailed quantity take-offs, with proficiency in On-Screen Takeoff/ Bluebeam (OST), ensuring accurate calculations for all sitework trades and utility, including earthwork.
  • Estimate Preparation: Develop accurate estimates at schematic, conceptual design development, and construction document stages, including material take-offs and subcontractor budgeting.
  • Subcontractor Management: Review and validate subcontractor bids and proposed schedules and communicate with subcontractors to maintain interest and focus during the bid process.
  • Geotechnical and Environmental Analysis: Interpret and analyze geotechnical and environmental reports to apply cost impacts to projects. Collect and assess existing site data through documents and site visits.
  • Bid Documentation: Prepare detailed and accurate bid scopes for each subcontract trade and major vendor. Accurately complete and evaluate subcontractor tabulation sheets and assemble them with the proposal and in the backup bid book.
  • Software Proficiency: Transfer quantities to Sage for estimating, and maintain a working knowledge of estimating software, such as Sage, On-Screen Takeoff, and Building Connected.
  • Project Scheduling: Assist in developing project schedules and make site visits to identify cost/time-impacting obstacles.
  • Communication and Presentation: Present estimates to management and customers, communicating clearly and professionally with all stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Improve the practical and technical approach to estimating, ensuring United Construction remains competitive and profitable.
  • Reputation and Quality Maintenance: Enhance United Construction's reputation through professional actions and maintain the highest service, quality, and integrity levels.
  • Training and Development: Engage in ongoing training and continuing education to support continuous learning and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Proven experience in civil estimating, with a strong understanding of construction processes, costs, and building systems.
  • Proficient in On-Screen Takeoff (OST), Sage, and other relevant estimating software.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings and contract documents.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
