Seattle City Light is looking for a few Utility Construction Workers to join our team! Utility Construction Workers are assigned to the Transmission and Distribution Operations Division's Civil Construction Unit and perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of underground and trenched electrical distribution systems and repair of side sewers. This position will report to the Civil Construction Supervisor.

  • Perform hand or machine excavation for construction, repair and maintenance of electrical ducts, vaults, hand holes and sewers.
  • Perform skilled or semi-skilled carpentry, masonry and asphalt work incidental to the construction, repair and maintenance of underground and electrical distribution systems.
  • Clean up and remove PCB-contaminated oils, asbestos and other electrical insulating materials.
  • Operate trucks and lifting devices (e.g., lift gates) for installing underground electrical equipment and facilities.)
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools (e.g. jackhammers, drills, hydraulic speed shoring, asphalt gads and tampers, concrete saws and specialized video cameras).
  • Maintain positive working relationships in a diverse workforce.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level or type as assigned.

Employees in this position must be available to work on weekends and evenings as needed. May be assigned to either the North or South Service Centers. May be required to work at the Tolt, Cedar Falls, Skagit and Boundary Projects.

Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:

  • A minimum of one year of heavy, outdoor construction experience.
  • Successful completion of a written and/or working test that includes activities around non-energized electrical utility vaults and trucks as well as operation of hand tools or equipment.

Certification/License:

  • A valid State of Washington Driver's License is required for employment. This license must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
  • A Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the airbrake restriction removed and a valid Medical Certificate are required. This license and certification must be obtained within 6 months of the date of hire, and maintained throughout employment in this position.
  • An Abstract of Complete Driving Record (obtained at applicant's expense) from the State of Washington Department of Licensing.
  • The City of Seattle participates in a comprehensive drug testing program in accordance with US Department of Transportation regulations.

Incumbents in this position must obtain the following certifications within the first six (6) months of employment:

  • Electrical Worker Safety Training Certificate.
  • Flagging and Traffic Control Certificate.
  • Asbestos Worker and Hazardous Material Handling Certificate
  • First Aid, CPR, and Vault Rescue Certificate.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Work around energized power cables or equipment.
  • Stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Lift objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Work with toxic or hazardous substances.
  • Work in tunnels and other confined spaces at depths up to 20 feet below ground.
  • Work with pneumatic tools such as jackhammers, spade guns, rotary rock drills, rivet busters and chipping guns.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather and often around congested and high-volume motor vehicle traffic.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Two years of heavy, outdoor construction experience.
  • A current Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the airbrake restriction removed and a valid Medical Certificate.
  • Electrical Worker Safety Training Certificate.
  • Flagging and Traffic Control Certificate.
  • Asbestos Worker and Hazardous Material Handling Certificate
  • First Aid, CPR, and Vault Rescue Certificate.
  • Proven experience maintaining positive working relationships in a diverse workforce.
  • Experience interacting with the public sector.

The full salary range for this position is hourly rate $36.71 to hourly rate $39.20.
