SLR is seeking a highly experienced Geotechnical Engineer to support our geotechnical engineering group on an as-needed, hourly basis. This individual will serve as a technical mentor and advisor, providing guidance on complex geotechnical challenges and helping to train and develop junior staff. The role is ideal for a seasoned professional who wishes to remain engaged in the field and contribute their expertise to the next generation of engineers.

Job Description

We are SLR Consulting (US), a 500+ coast-to-coast team of advisory, environmental/engineering, and regulatory professionals. We deliver environmental and sustainability services to our clients through the integration of over 30 advisory, technical environmental, and engineering disciplines to help clients address some of their most complex challenges around sustainability. As our new principal-level Geotechnical Engineer, you will play an important role on a team whose work is essential to achieving this goal.

Here's what else you'll enjoy as part of our team:

  • The hourly range for this position is $110 - $125. Final agreed upon compensation will be commensurate with individual education, professional designation, experience, internal parity, and location.
  • This is an hourly-as-needed (HAN), non-benefits eligible position.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Mentorship & Training

o Provide hands-on training to junior geotechnical staff on field observation techniques and proper documentation practices.

o Review and critique field reports to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to industry standards.

o Conduct periodic workshops or one-on-one coaching sessions to build staff competency in geotechnical field practices.

  • Project Consultation

o Offer expert input during the planning and proposal phases of complex or high-risk geotechnical projects.

o Advise on exploration strategies.

o Provide technical review and guidance during the analysis and report-writing phases.

o Support construction-phase services by interpreting geotechnical data and offering recommendations for field modifications or issue resolution.

  • Quality Assurance & Risk Management

o Assist in the review of geotechnical deliverables to ensure technical quality and consistency.

o Identify potential geotechnical risks and provide mitigation strategies based on past experience and best practices.

  • Collaboration & Communication

o Serve as a trusted advisor to project managers and technical leads.

o Participate in internal technical meetings and contribute to the development of best practices and standard operating procedures.

o Maintain clear and professional communication with staff across all levels of the organization.

Qualifications/Education/Memberships:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Minimum of 25 years of geotechnical engineering experience, including leadership roles
  • Demonstrated expertise in field investigations, laboratory testing interpretation, foundation design, and construction support
  • Strong mentoring and communication skills
  • Availability on a as-needed, flexible basis
