General Description

Performs intermediate level, skilled, para-professional engineering work in the office and field. Performs field surveys and drafting of technical material. Performs accurate collection of data and development of drawings and maps. Has work checked periodically by a supervisor for accuracy and completeness. Works under the general coordination of the Engineering Technician III(a) and III(b). May assist in design of public works projects. Performs traffic counts and maintains associated records.

Job Functions
  • Drafts construction plan drawings for Public Works projects including street construction, sewer and water main installation, sidewalk replacement, storm sewer construction, and other related Public Works improvements.
  • Assists in the preparation of construction specifications and contract bidding forms.
  • Performs computations for Public Works projects based on design determined by a supervisor.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries regarding current construction projects and information available at City Hall.
  • Performs field surveys and collects data for the design and construction of Public Works projects and studies.
  • Updates utility maps and various city facilities maps.
  • Performs construction observation of public improvement projects and maintains records thereof.
  • Performs other related job duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good knowledge of public infrastructure construction practices.
  • Ability to operate surveying equipment and perform field surveys.
  • Ability to perform technical drafting on CAD.
  • Ability to perform algebraic mathematics quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to use computer applications in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions in an efficient manner.
  • Willingness to assume responsibility for assigned tasks.
Education, Training and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of associate (technical) degree for construction management, civil engineering technology, land surveying, or equivalent.
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in construction inspection, surveying and technical drafting.
  • Familiarity with the use of Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning System data collection.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
