Hampden-Sydney College is accepting applications for a Campus Plumber. Reporting directly to the Building Maintenance Supervisor, the Campus Plumber plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of plumbing systems across campus. This position involves a diverse range of responsibilities, including installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of plumbing infrastructure. Assists with preventative maintenance tasks as needed. Collaborates closely with other facilities staff and campus departments to support the overall functioning of the campus community. Possesses strong analytical and mathematical skills in determining appropriate repair methods. Self-motivated, self-supervising individual with excellent customer service and communication skills. This position participates in the maintenance shops on-call rotation and responds to campus emergencies including inclement weather as needed.

Fosters a positive customer experience within the H-SC campus community through effective communication, positive interactions, and planning.

Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing systems including water supply lines, drain lines, gas lines, fixtures, pumps, valves, and backflow prevention devices.

Performs preventative and corrective maintenance from inspections and work orders generated from the computerized maintenance management system. Interfaces with the CMMS daily.

S upports facility renovation, repair, and construction projects in compliance with project documents and schedules.

Develop estimates, order materials, and maintain high standards for employee conduct, productivity, and safety.

Read, understand, and work from drawings, specifications, standards, and instructions.

Perform routine inspections of plumbing systems to identify and address potential issues before they escalate.

Responds promptly to plumbing service requests and emergencies, prioritizing tasks based on urgency and impact on campus operations.

Maintains tools and supplies in proper order to ensure efficiency and readiness.

Collaborate with other facilities staff to support campus events, projects, and initiatives requiring plumbing assistance.

Installs temporary plumbing setups or water hook-ups for special events.

Demonstrated knowledge of plumbing principles, codes, and regulations, including the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Ensures all work performed on campus meets or exceeds regulations.

Performs all repairs with high attention to detail and professional craftsmanship.

Maintain accurate records of work performed, including maintenance schedules, service logs, and equipment inventories.

Stays informed about advancements in plumbing technology and industry best practices; makes recommendations for infrastructure improvements.

Adheres to all relevant safety protocols and procedures, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Serves as essential personnel and may be required to work during inclement weather or other emergencies. Participates in the shops on-call rotation.

P icks up litter, trash, and sticks as needed on campus.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • A valid Virginia drivers license required.
  • High School Diploma or GED Required.
  • Required 5+ years of experience within the plumbing trade.
  • Minimum valid Virginia Plumbing license required. Master-level preferred. Out-of-state licenses will be considered based upon reciprocity.
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, plumbing diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • OSHA and first aid/CPR training preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to climb and maintain balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, or crouch in confined and dimly lit spaces.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Able to perform job duties in inclement weather and other adverse conditions (high precarious places, toxic or caustic chemical usage areas, risk of electrical shock, near moving mechanical parts, high noise level areas, extreme heat or cold non-weather related).
  • Ability to work from ladders, lifts, or other aerial equipment as needed.
