Description

Under immediate supervision, performs difficult technical work in the enforcement of the North Carolina State Building Code, Volume IV (NFPA 70); does related work as apparent or assigned.

Examples of Duties

  • Makes inspections of electrical installations;
  • Receives complaints in regard to defective electrical work and personally disposes of difficult enforcement problems;
  • Investigates condition of electrical installations in buildings where fires have occurred and authorizes re-connection of service;
  • Instructs electricians as to the proper location of incoming services and wiring centers;
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of work performed;
  • Supervises the inspection of electrical installations during construction and the examination of completed installations for workmanship and use of proper materials;
  • Appears in court as a witness.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a diploma from high school and extensive experience in the installation, repair, maintenance and inspection of electrical systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining and operating a variety of electrical installations, equipment and appliances; thorough knowledge of possible defects and faults in electrical wiring and appliances and of standard testing devices and effective corrective measures; thorough working knowledge relating to electrical appliances and installations and of national electrical code standards; ability to detect and locate defective electrical wiring and construction of installation; ability to understand and work from construction and wiring plans, blueprints, drawings and diagrams; ability to maintain cooperative relations with contractors, the general public and other officials.

  • Possession of a valid Driver's License

  • Certification as a qualified electrical inspector by the State of North Carolina

Certification Ladder: This position is eligible for participation in the Certification Ladder Program. Each certification in an eligible trade area (building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing) outside of the primary work responsibility shall result in a 3% increase in pay, so long as the program is in effect. Please note that this program is at the discretion of the Elected Body during the Annual Budget process. Starting salary can be adjusted bade on the number of additional certifications held.
