Basic Function:

The daily operation, maintenance, as well as experimental design and set-up, data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation. This position oversees and provides direction for technical support for labs.

Department Overview:

The Department of Biological Sciences provides hands-on lab experiences for a large number of students. This position will coordinate all lab prep of our teaching lab sections through the management of Lab Material Supervisor staff and the associated budget. The position will also serve the role of Building coordinator, and coordinate building projects that affect research and teaching spaces in the department.

Level Scope:

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Essential Functions:

60% of Time the Lab Manager must:

  • Daily Management: The routine operation, maintenance, and quality control, as well experimental design & set-up, data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation

  • Fiscal Management: Responsible for fiscal management of facility with supervisor oversight

  • Schedule and organize lab training sessions for lab instructors
  • Direct the implementation and testing of laboratory activities

35% of Time the Lab Manager must:

  • Update lab fee budget regularly and ensure charges are correct and annually report on expenditures and needs

  • Coordinate with AES and FOM for projects relating to the Biology department and the Science. Building in general. Keep affected parties informed and mitigate potential disruptions to research and academic activities

  • Schedule building-related work orders and coordinate with the department Operations Manager for budgeting

  • Manage and renew Biosafety Protocols for Academic Labs

  • Submit special course fee requests

  • Supervise and evaluate staff

  • Assist with department-wide inventory audits

  • Establish and renew contracts

  • Coordinate evacuation drills

5% of Time Other Duties as Assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Ability to assist with grant writing and manuscript preparation

  • Possess the appropriate background in experimental design and analysis

  • Interest, experience, and/or ability to promote cultural competency and/or diversity

  • Knowledge of computer lab management and maintenance

  • Experience and proven success in leading the management and support of instructional labs

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree and 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's of Science Biology Preferred Salary and Benefit s: Salary starting at $55,057.60 annually and is commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package , including (but not limited to):
