Summary:

The HVAC Mechanic II performs a wide range of tasks related to the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems within the facility. In addition to core mechanical responsibilities, this role supports broader physical plant operations, including inspections, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance of building systems and production support equipment. The HVAC Mechanic II demonstrates advanced troubleshooting skills, works independently on moderately complex tasks, and may provide guidance to junior technicians as needed. Responsibilities may extend into other skilled trade areas such as electrical work, plumbing, sheet metal, welding, and general maintenance. The mechanic is expected to complete work orders and PMs on schedule, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards. This position collaborates with cross-functional teams, attends meetings or committee assignments when required, and may be called upon to work overtime based on operational needs. The HVAC Mechanic II plays a critical role in sustaining a safe, comfortable, and compliant environment that supports manufacturing and facility operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs HVAC and refrigeration systems, including air handlers, chillers, boilers, compressors, exhaust systems, and ductwork.
  • Performs work across multiple trades as needed, including maintenance, electrical work, heating and refrigeration, metalwork, painting, pest control, pipefitting, plumbing, sheet metal work, welding, and related mechanical tasks.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance (PM) on HVAC and building systems, completing all assigned PMs by scheduled due dates.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots moderately complex mechanical, electrical, and control system issues to ensure optimal equipment performance and reliability.
  • Inspects, repairs, and maintains building systems and production support equipment to minimize downtime and support manufacturing operations.
  • Responds to and completes assigned work orders promptly and documents work performed and materials used.
  • Collaborates cooperatively with employees, contractors, and other professionals to maintain positive working relationships and ensure effective communication within the area of responsibility.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, etc.), and building codes while performing all tasks.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and safety or facilities-related committees as required.
  • Provides guidance or mentorship to junior maintenance staff when needed to promote best practices and technical skill development.
  • Works overtime as necessary to meet operational demands, including emergency response and unscheduled repairs.
  • Assists with facility-wide maintenance efforts, supporting cross-functional trades to uphold plant infrastructure integrity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed by immediate supervisor or department leadership.
  • Read/interpret SOPs to ensure compliance

  • Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of HVAC job experience in a pharmaceutical, manufacturing or similar work environment
  • Must be EPA refrigerant certified

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as, but not limited to, safety instructions, standard operating procedures, policies, and manuals. Ability to write clearly and communicate effectively.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals and percentages. Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to demonstrate understanding and effective application of written and oral instruction.

Computer Skills: Skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to quickly adapt and learn new manufacturing software systems.

Physical Demands:

The essential physical demands will vary for each Curia position. All positions may require regular or occasional lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10 pounds, frequently; up to 25 pounds occasionally; and up to 50 pounds infrequently. Additionally, all positions entail regular sitting, standing and reaching, with some roles requiring prolonged periods of time for each activity. Visual acuity, both close and distant, along with depth perception is necessary in each role, with or without corrective lenses. Please note that employees are prohibited from wearing contact lenses in work areas with exposure to cleaning agents. Hand and finger dexterity are integral to all positions, with specific activities varying from typing to manipulating maintenance tools or operating keypads, switches, and buttons. Occasional stooping, kneeling, twisting, crouching, crawling and balancing are also part of each positions physical requirements. Certain roles may involve climbing and working at elevated heights as well.

Work Environment:

The working environments will vary for each Curia position. The employee may be required to work in an office, manufacturing, or warehouse environment.

The office environment is designed for comfort and productivity, with room temperature settings maintained for optimal working conditions. It is common to hear conversational noise in the background.

The pharmaceutical manufacturing environment is sterile. Therefore, aseptic gowning is required. Personal protective equipment (nitrile gloves, clean room socks, face-shields, safety glasses, aprons, steel-toed shoes and powered air purifying respirators) is necessary, depending upon the task at hand. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, confined areas, and refrigerator or freezer temperatures when working in a sterile environment.

The warehouse environment is typically set at a controlled temperature but the employee may be exposed to refrigerator or freezer temperatures when retrieving materials.

Some positions may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts, elevated heights, airborne particles, electrical activities and vibration. In addition, some positions may work with or be exposed to, compressed gases and must wear ear protection.

All environments may be subject to working with or being exposed to cleaning agents.
