Equipment Operator III - Street Transportation Department

ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Equipment Operator III position requires considerable skill in operating heavy motorized equipment and constant attention to safety. The position is responsible for safely and efficiently operating 10-yard dump trucks, vactors, water trucks, tractor mowers, and other equipment. Equipment Operators may be assigned to labor work or other job assignments below their classification when not assigned to equipment. Applicants who successfully apply will receive an invitation to participate in the demonstration exam.

The Street Transportation Department currently has several Equipment Operator III vacancies in two different sections.

Street Maintenance Division - This section is dedicated to maintaining nearly 5,000 miles of public roadways and other assets within the right-of-way, ensuring a high quality of life for Phoenix residents. Our comprehensive services include asphalt and pothole repair, street resurfacing, and debris removal to keep our streets safe and accessible. We prioritize street sweeping and right-of-way landscape maintenance while addressing ADA issues and grading/dust-proofing alleys. Our team is committed to preventive maintenance and provides rapid responses to storm-related challenges, such as flooded streets, clogged storm drains, and wash maintenance.

Traffic Services Division (Striping Section) - This section is responsible for installing and maintaining all traffic control signs and pavement markings in the City of Phoenix, which encompasses a street network of over 5,000 miles of public roadways. This function is crucial to Traffic Services' mission of ensuring the safety and mobility of people, goods, and services throughout the City of Phoenix.

The demonstration exam will vary depending on the section applied for.

Street Maintenance demonstration: applicants will be required to perform a 7-Step Air Brake Test, demonstrate proper 10-yard dump truck operations and verbalize these actions during the driving course.

Traffic Services demonstration: applicants will be required to perform a 7-Step Air Brake Test and complete a driving course in a striping truck.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Knowledge of hydraulically operated equipment.
  • Ability to operate equipment in a skillful and safe manner.
  • Knowledge of traffic barricade set-up and take down and working within a lane closure.

SALARY

Pay Range: $23.74 to $35.08 per hour.

Hiring Range: $23.74 to $30.31 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a departmental training course for the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators III in the specific division.
  • OR be qualified for "out-of-class" pay as an Equipment Operator III.
  • OR log 120 hours on the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators III in the specific division.
  • OR have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment over two tons, on the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators III in the specific division.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Current possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL).
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Working conditions and requirements:

  • Required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) medical examination and possess a valid class A Commercial Driver License with a Tanker (N) endorsement at time of hire.
  • May be required to work as a Laborer.
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required, and as a condition of continued employment, employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing, as required by law.
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust; and walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience in/with:

  • Operating one or more of the following pieces of equipment: rear loaders, articulated loaders, backhoes, brush/dump trucks, 2,000 and 3,000 gallon water trucks.
  • Operating equipment in a skillful and safe manner.
  • Performing various landscape maintenance activities.
  • Working safely in a busy airport environment.
  • Operating mid-sized motorized landscaping equipment and vehicles.
  • Operating pavement marking equipment.
  • Directing the work of a small group of employees.
  • Providing direction or instructions to others in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
