Enterprise Infrastructure at the University of Iowa is seeking an IT Design Engineer to provide oversight for the design, implementation, and management of campus-wide information transport systems. This role provides strategic, enterprise-level planning, development, and maintenance of wired and wireless network infrastructure, ensuring Information Technology meets evolving voice and data service needs for the university.
Duties to include:
- Maintaining design standards.
- Overseeing complex infrastructure projects from conception through implementation.
- Overseeing the work of both UI staff and contractors to deliver scalable, secure, and high-performance solutions.
- Responsible for documentation management (AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and ITConnect records) as well as assisting with cross-departmental collaborations with Facilities Management, design professionals, and other Information Technology Services teams at the university.
- May participate in vendor negotiations.
The IT Design Engineer possesses strong knowledge of networking and communication hardware, wired and wireless technologies, and project management practices. Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in a field relevant to the position or an equivalent combination of education and additional related experience.
- Extensive experience (typically 3 years or more) supporting communication infrastructure, including planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of wired and wireless network infrastructure.
- Some project management experience, including preparing bid proposals and project budgets for infrastructure system integrations and installations, or closely related.
- Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills, along with an ability to be systematic, technically curious, and self-motivated.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies (including internal staff, campus collaborators, and contractors) in both technical and non-technical environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write and deliver clear and concise instructions, reports, and work summaries.
- Strong interpersonal, customer service, and customer relations skills.
- Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team.
- Familiarity with CSI Div 27.
- Proficiency with construction techniques, AutoCAD, or other similar related drafting software, and structured cabling.
- Valid US drivers license and ability to meet UI fleet safety requirements .
Desirable Qualifications:
- Industry certifications such as BICSI RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) or related.
- Experience supporting technology in an enterprise level configuration (500+ users)
- Experience evaluating vendor options, negotiating vendor contracts, and making budget recommendations.
- Experience supporting technology in a higher education environment.
- Basic knowledge of RFI (Request for Information), RFP (Request for Proposal), and RFQ (Request for Quotation) documents.
