About the Position

In this role, you will...

  • Inspect buildings under construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance with approved plans and building codes.

  • Review construction plans and specifications for proposed buildings and improvements.

  • Issue notices of code violations related to their specific licensure.

  • Record inspection results in the Land Information Management System (Accela) and prepare related reports and worksheets.

  • Research files and databases, and maintains background materials for reporting purposes.

  • Provide excellent customer service by answering public inquiries related to building codes and ordinances.

  • Maintain positive interactions with coworkers, peers, and customers across departments.

  • Serve in an assigned role during County-declared emergencies.

About the Schedule

Work Hours:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.

  • Typical Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ( no weekends! )

As a reminder, all county employees are considered essential and must be prepared to protect and support the community and its citizens. Each employee, without exception, will have a duty assignment and be required to work during a disaster or declared emergency.

About You

To be considered for this role, you must have the following:

Electrical Inspector I -

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in electrical construction, field inspections, or plans review.

  • Valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.

  • Or: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Fire Administration, Building Construction/Inspection, or related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience, with at least one year in field construction ( 30 college credits is considered equivalent to one (ear of experience ).

  • Must have, or be able to obtain within 120 days of hire, a provisional license as a Standard Inspector in the applicable Electrical trade.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain within 12 months of hire ( or prior to the expiration of the provisional license; not to exceed 24 months from the date of hire ), a Standard Inspector license in the Electrical trade.

  • Please note that all Provisional and Standard licenses must be issued by the State of Florida, Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

Electrical Inspector II -

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of work experience performing plan reviews and/or inspections .

  • Valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.

  • Current Standard Inspector License in the Electrical trade.

  • One of the following licenses or certifications issued by the State of Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR): Building Inspector; Mechanical Commercial Inspector; Plumbing Commercial Inspector; 1 or 2 Family Inspector; or Plans Examiner License. Or one of the following other certifications can be accepted: Damage Assessment Certification (from ICC), Fire Safety Inspector I (from the Division of State Fire Marshal).

The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

  • State of Florida Standard License, issued by DBPR, as an Electrical Inspector.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and able to quickly learn County-specific software like LIMS (Accela) and Workday.

  • Capable of understanding and applying relevant rules, regulations, codes, and policies.

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five years.

Physical Demands: Employees in this role must occasionally lift and/or move 20 lbs.

About Everything Else

Starting Pay Ranges:

Electrical Inspector I: $25.70 - $29.00
Electrical Inspector II: $26.99 - $33.00
