Facilities Department - Grounds Maintenance

8 hours per day/260 days per year

Salary $24.87 - $33.00/hour

Job Summary: Assists the Manager of Grounds Maintenance in the operation, repair, and improvements of the grounds of Unionville Chadds Ford School District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES : Employee must have the ability to perform the following essential functions on a timely basis with or without reasonable accommodations.

  1. Assure district grounds, athletic facilities, and related equipment are safe for use.
  2. Recognize, Identify, and prioritize hazards and issues
  3. Responsible for the proper lining and preparation of athletic fields for games and practices as per regulating specifications.
  4. Mow and care for all district sites.
  5. Acts as next in command in supervisor's absence
  6. Perform snow removal and ice prevention salting on an as-needed basis.
  7. Maintains vehicles and equipment in good working condition as per the manufacturers’ recommendations.
  8. Strong concrete and asphalt maintenance and installation knowledge.
  9. Working knowledge of playground equipment repair and maintenance
  10. Responsible for implementation of proper pruning, bed maintenance, and seasonal clean-up
  11. Perform miscellaneous repair tasks assigned such as but not limited to: street signs, fencing, parking lot striping, etc.
  12. Perform finish grading work on excavated areas, topdressing of athletic fields, aeration, overseeding, etc. to all lawn and/or green space areas as assigned and needed.
  13. Ability to proficiently operate equipment of many types as owned or rented by the District, always in a safe manner.
  14. Computer skills – work orders, supply orders, email, and other basic computer applications
  15. Responds to emergencies during and after work hours as needed.
  16. Assists in training of Grounds staff
  17. May be required to work occasional weekends or evenings for event support
  18. Assist in the operation, repair, and maintenance of district sewer plants.
  19. Any other duties as assigned by the Manager of Grounds Maintenance

QUALIFICATIONS: To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skills, and/or ability necessary.

  1. High School Diploma (Further education in turf science or related trade school preferred) - or a relevant combination of education and experience.
  2. Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions
  3. Valid Driver’s License (Class A CDL Preferred)
  4. Pesticide Applicator’s License in Category 23 and/or 07 (or the ability to obtain within 6 months)
  5. Outstanding communication and organizational skills
  6. 5 years experience in grounds maintenance operations.
  7. 5 years of progressively responsible experience
  8. Supervisory experience
  9. Working knowledge of horticulture, arboriculture, and agronomy
  10. Strong computer skills
  11. Strong mathematical knowledge as it relates to construction
  12. Strong knowledge of excavation and turf care techniques.
  13. Wastewater experience and/or license are preferred.
  14. Candidate must adhere to all local, state, federal, and school code requirements for employment.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  1. Twelve (12) months per year, 40 hours per week
  2. School Year: 8-hour shift Monday-Friday
  3. Summer: 10-hour shift Monday-Thursday (day)
  4. Overtime may be required (possible weekends)

Environment

  1. Indoor/outdoor environment subject to changing temperatures. Exposure to extreme temperature and weather conditions: below 32 degrees and/or exceeding 90 degrees.
  2. Subject to regular exposure to fumes, dust and odor, mower exhaust, dirt, oil, grease, and noise from equipment operation.
  3. Work around and with machinery and motorized equipment.

Physical Demands

  1. Frequently stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, and turn.
  2. Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull heavy object(s) weighing up to 50 pounds.
  3. Occasional overhead work, reach, climb, and ascend/descend a ladder.
  4. Manipulate hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools, equipment, and powered machinery.
  5. Clarity of vision to observe diagnostic instruments, manuals, and other printed information.
  6. Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner.
  7. Perform physically demanding work.
  8. May require driving a vehicle to conduct work.
