Construction Inspector

The purpose of this position is to inspect City infrastructure projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspects construction and maintenance projects, reads related drawings, recommends corrections, ensures compliance with standards and specifications, and tests materials used in projects when appropriate.
  • Receives and responds to concerns or complaints from contractors, engineers, departments, business owners, homeowners, and citizens.
  • Maintains a variety of records related to inspections including as-built drawings, files, forums, and related records, and collects and enters detailed information related to construction in applicable databases.
  • Recommends tools and supplies for project construction, obtains cost estimates, and assists in acquiring budget information and prices.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Job Specifications and Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • Applicable practices, materials, and equipment in assigned area of responsibility;
  • Mathematical concepts;
  • Basic GIS concepts;
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, crawling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
  • Heavy work: Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25 - 50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.

  • Operating a computer and applicable software applications
  • Applying local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations;
  • Reading, understanding, and interpreting detailed plans, drawings, and documents
  • Detecting errors in construction projects
  • Collecting and interpreting data
  • Handling multiple projects simultaneously
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Required Experience

Associate's degree or diploma from an accredited college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school, with at least one (1) year of experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
