Job Summary:

Successful mechanical engineering design is a key component of developing new products for chemical and biological detection/identification. The Mechanical Design Engineer will play a key role on project teams to perform product design and testing of portable chemical and biological detection/identification related products that utilize mass spectrometry, laser induced bio-fluorescence detection, and other similar technologies. The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for various aspects of the product design, which may include designing critical sample flow paths, designing very high vacuum systems, and designing to meet various commercial and military standards. The Mechanical Design Engineer should be comfortable with rapidly prototyping and testing concepts. The Mechanical Design Engineer will work in a multi-disciplinary project team, including engineers from other disciplines and scientists/chemists. Possible examples of designs include development of novel ionization sources, traditional and novel heating techniques for sensitive flow paths, working with fluidic controls using pumps and flow sensors, stepper motor and other electromechanical positional controls, drone and other unmanned vehicle integration.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design products/systems such as handheld sensors, portable instrumentation, and unmanned system payloads.
  • Build prototypes, perform design verification, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Support product development efforts by performing trade studies, defining and executing experiments, and investigating new and novel methods and processes.
  • Derive and document requirements for mechanical designs from high-level system specifications and by working directly with internal and external customers.
  • Work with vendors and purchasing to specify components.
  • Perform thermal, fluid and/or structural analysis to support product development efforts (a plus).
  • Create, release, and maintain design documentation according to established procedures.

Job Qualifications:

  • US Citizenship Required
  • BSME (or equivalent) from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant experience in mechanical design and product development
  • Experience with SolidWorks
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) practices
  • Working knowledge and practical/hands on experience with assembly of electro-mechanical components
  • Knowledge of machining practices and what parts can/cannot be created in a machine shop
  • Knowledge of sheet metal design practices including strength and tolerancing
  • Interface with suppliers to expedite and coordinate part deliveries and resolve design issues with suppliers
  • Provide ongoing engineering support for production instruments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • High energy, proactive orientation; comfortable in a dynamic, fast-paced atmosphere
  • Limited travel to customer sites and to test ranges may be required
  • Experience with SolidWorks EPDM or other PDM tools a plus
  • Thermal, fluid and structural analysis using simulation software a plus
  • Experience directing and working with Industrial Designers a plus
  • Knowledge of injection molding practices to include draft angles, texture, materials, etc. a plus
