Join our team as a Building Inspector and play a key role in ensuring the safety and compliance of construction throughout the community. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of residential and commercial projects, conduct field inspections, and support high-quality development.

IMPORTANT APPLICANT INFORMATION:

This position is open on a continuous basis. The first review of applications will begin the week of July 7, 2025, with subsequent reviews conducted weekly. The posting may close at any time after the first review.

JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

Positions assigned to this class are responsible for examining the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial and residential buildings to ensure compliance with building codes and ordinances, safety, and zoning regulations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a fully qualified level construction inspection classification in the construction management job family where tasks and assignments are performed using a variety of procedures and techniques. This is the experienced/journey level that is fully competent in the technical/functional aspects of assigned role. Work usually involves the application of sound technical principles and best practices associated with planning, diagnosis, troubleshooting and problem solving. Incumbents perform varied assignments requiring journey level knowledge in assigned area of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Towns needs.

  • Performs on-site building inspections for compliance with Town and other applicable building codes, including but not limited to, structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire safety, health, and other applicable codes; prepares resulting inspection reports.
  • Provides assistance to contractors, builders, designers, and architects in the development of alternative ideas to meet code and ordinance requirements.
  • Promotes building codes and departmental programs and services to the community.
  • Performs lot locations checks to ensure compliance with zoning and developmental ordinances.
  • Maintains accurate records and report of daily inspections, including notes and writing correction notices left on-site.
  • Researches and responds to technical inquiries and complaints from contractors, builders, builder owners, and other Town departments.
  • Assists customers with questions related to building codes.
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions; follows Town-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring; operates and maintains Town vehicle in a safe manner and performs daily inspections; documents maintenance defects and malfunctions.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Certification by the International Code Council as a Commercial Inspector, Residential Inspector, Electrical Inspector or Mechanical Inspector;
  • Drivers License;
  • Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position by Human Resources, per State and/or Federal Law. Upon conditional offer of employment, the candidate selected will be required to undergo testing for alcohol and controlled substances within twenty-four (24) hours of the offer.
