The Water Distribution department is tasked with operation, maintenance and repair of the City's water distribution system; performing repairs of the distribution system. The Equipment Operator I is an entry-level position and serves as a member of the crew in the performance of field duties, assignments, assessments and repair of the distribution system. The Equipment Operator may also be required to work within any part of the Underground Utilities department as directed by the Foreman.
As a public employee this position is responsible for providing reliable delivery of utility services. This position requires consistent and prompt response to emergency repairs that occur outside of normal working hours.
**Job Dimensions**
Primary responsibilities for this position include maintenance and operation of the water distribution system, including making new water service taps, installation, maintenance, replacement and repair of the City's fire hydrants; installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of the water system valves; installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of water mains and service connections; installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of water meters, perform necessary testing as required by the OEPA and maintain certification, as required, to perform necessary analysis; performing locate services for all City utilities (water, sanitary and storm sewer) infrastructure; occasionally effectively and safely operate heavy and light construction equipment as well as the mechanical and electronic equipment used in the performance of job duties such as, but not limited to, vehicles, dump trucks, excavation equipment, valve maintenance equipment, GPS equipment and locating equipment. This position requires effective communication with co-workers and supervisors and responding appropriately to customers and citizens in a respectful manner. City policies and procedures must be followed at all times.
Secondary responsibilities include performing tasks that require similar skills in the operation and maintenance of the sanitary and storm systems, snow removal as directed, and assisting other departments in the performance of their job duties as directed.

**Nature and Scope**
- Follow direction and guidance from other Equipment Operator II and Foreman when assigned as part of a work crew.
- Effectively us a PC, software and field equipment used by the department in the performance of duties and assignments.
- Exercise sound judgement and knowledge of water, sanitary sewer and stormwater systems.
- Respond to numerous call-outs outside of normal working hours, work days and shifts including weekends and holidays when needed.
- Perform job duties in a safe manner consistent with City policies.
- Apply mechanical skills and creativity to solve problems.
- When directed, perform work for all divisions within sewer, water, stormwater as well as any other department within the City.
- Perform job duties under stressful conditions, including inclement weather or adverse conditions.
- Assist in plowing snow and salting City streets.
**Major Challenges**
- Respond to calls for service during non-scheduled work hours and with minimal supervision.
- Learn and assist in work that requires specialized skills through experience.
- Apply mechanical skills and creativity to solve problems.
- Address questions and/or comments from the public in emergency situations.
- Ability to effectively resolve customer conflict.
