POSITION SUMMARY:
Under supervision of Landfill supervisor and/or Assistant, operates heavy equipment to compact refuse and cover with fill dirt daily at the landfill.
Digs new landfill pits and various earthmoving tasks necessary for refuse disposal. Cleans and performs maintenance checks on equipment and repairs minor problems daily.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates and performs daily maintenance checks on trash compactor, 23 yd. elevating scraper, backhoe, road grader, water truck or bulldozer.
Fuels and repairs equipment when minor problems are observed during daily inspections.
Help spot incoming trucks and vehicles at landfill dumping site when necessary.
Abides by all SWP3 and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules and regulations.
Keep all heavy equipment clean inside and out.
Performs all duties as assigned in a safe and efficient manner.
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS USED:
Trash compactor, 23 yd. elevating scraper, road grader, water truck, semi tractor and trailer, backhoe, front end-loader, mechanical tools, power washer and hand tools.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Operating equipment, driving and working in all extreme weather conditions on Saturdays, holidays, early or late shifts as needed. Walking in mud, snow, heavy dusts and refuse with sharp and potentially hazardous materials. Climbing steep equipment steps which can be slippery at times. Requires occasional lifting materials of up to 75 pounds and could involve heavier lifting of over 100 pounds with laborers assistance, and ability to pull with a force of at least 94 pounds. Must be able to effectively communicate with co-workers. Regular and punctual attendance is required of this job.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Any combination of training and experience with at least completion of the eighth (8) grade education plus a minimum of one year experience in the operation of heavy equipment is required. Experience in the operation of a front-end loader, road grader, elevating scraper or bulldozer is preferred. Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License is required, a Class A-CDL with Tanker endorsement is preferred. Must be able to obtain a Class C Solid Waste License on Sanitary Landfill operation and attend a waste screening class within 2 years of employment.
