Electrician

Responsible for performing routing maintenance, installation and repair of electrical equipment associated with water and wastewater treatment and distributions systems including pumps, blowers, mixers, compressors, controls, and related equipment. Master level electricians perform and assist other electricians and trades with diagnosing and repairing complex, unusual and very difficult electrical problems; and performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs main switchboards, panel boards, and other electrical equipment with voltages up to 600 volts AC and main bus amperages up to 6,000 while maintaining the integrity of the three phase systems
  • Master level electricians troubleshoot most complex electrical problems, and serve as the lead electrician
  • Master level is the lead electrician supporting the water and sewer utility systems
  • Installs circuits for power lighting, and equipment using various wiring methods (rigid metal, conduits, armored cable etc.)
  • Troubleshoots/repairs main branch circuit breakers etc.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains electrical and mechanical equipment and associated controls serving up to 100HP motors
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains electrical devices such as VFDs, control panels, relays, transformers, switches, receptacles
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots live electrical circuits and control panels where a blueprint or schematic may not be available
  • Diagnoses problems and repairs/replaces failed lighting systems and controls as well as ballasts on lighting equipment
  • Diagnose problems with level pressure transducer, transmitters and floats.
  • Diagnose Input/Output (I/O) at Primary Logic Controllers (PLCs) or up to the PLC.
  • Diagnose problems with pump stations and their controls.
  • Monitors and inspects contract work/projects relating to the systems to ensure compliance with contracts
  • Monitors contract work
  • Carries our designated procedures for seasonal start-ups and shutdowns
  • Maintains records of work performed to include safety inspections, parts and materials used/ordered, equipment failures and repairs
  • Trains, coaches, and mentors subordinates
  • Orders necessary parts and supplies

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with maintenance activities in other County departments
  • Assists with water and wastewater plant operations and distribution system maintenance as necessary
  • Removes snow from County property

Education and Experience:
Education equivalent to a high school diploma and 3 years of electrical experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Special Qualifications:
Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check. Must possess Virginia drivers license. Virginia Department of Professional Occupation and Regulation (DPOR) Master level preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of standards practices, methods, tools, and materials common to the electrical trade
  • Master level technicians have extensive knowledge of the national electrical code, NFPA and safety codes and lead more complex maintenance and repair activities and diagnostics
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and common hazards associated with working with electricity
  • Ability to plan, perform work of the trade at the Journeyman-level
  • Skilled in the use of maintenance tools and heavy machinery
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, meters, and tools common to the electrical trade
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams and schematics
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Performs other maintenance and preventive maintenance duties as required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as heavy. Must be able to lift, stoop, bend, crawl, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and from ladders and scaffolds in hot and cold temperatures. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. May work on rough or uneven surfaces, and confined spaces. May be required to work afterhours, weekends and on call. Must be able to perceive and discriminate depths, odors, and colors. Tasks may risk exposure to chemicals, odors, machinery, wetness, dust, fumes, dirt, vibrations, electricity, driving and confined spaces.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Essential functions are regularly performed in and around various county buildings.
