Utility Electrician

The purpose of this position is to provide journeyman level electrical work involving the maintenance and repair of all electrical equipment at water treatment plants, wells and wastewater lift stations.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Installs, repairs and modifies electrical equipment systems.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains high voltage electrical motors, motor controls and switchgear.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all electrical equipment, water plants, elevated storage reservoirs, wells, and sewage lift stations.
  • Operates and troubleshoots electrical generators and transformers.
  • Makes repairs and change to switchgear, transfer switches and generators.
  • Monitors and maintains cathodic protection systems.
  • Assists in RTU cable and antennas repair and replacement.
  • Evaluates new construction installations (i.e., punch lists and review drawings and prints).
  • Maintains 3-phase control panels consisting of contractors, motor control protectors, delay timers, flow meters and hydraulic pressure control valves.
  • Operates a variety of tools including pliers, wrenches, strippers, crimpers, dykes, saws, drills, etc. Utilizes a variety of cleaning solutions, degreasers, and solvents.
  • Maintains equipment records.
  • Maintains appropriate emergency inventory.
  • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of electrical experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state drivers license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Certified Electrical Journeyman License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of VFD, Soft Starter, Motor Control Center, Generator, PLC, and Lighting systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory, National Electrical Codes, State and local electrical codes and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of the safety hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, tools and terminology of the electrical trade.
  • Skill in all electrical maintenance and repair equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot energized electrical equipment, make repairs to complicated electrical wiring fixtures, and equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual work over extended periods of time, to lift articles weighing up to 50 pounds, climb ladders in lift stations and elevated water tanks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
    • Electrical shock; Heights.

WORK HOURS
Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)
