HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

The Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment such as cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scrapper attachments. Equipment is used to excavate, load, or move dirt, gravel, or other materials. Operator may read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans, and may grease, adjust and make emergency repairs to equipment.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential duties and responsibilities listed in a satisfactory manner:

Performs preventive maintenance on equipment in accordance with prescribed technical manuals

Operate a straight truck, over 4 tons, usually 10 wheels.

Operate a trailer having a set or several sets of wheels at the rear only, with the forward portion being supported by the truck tractor or towing vehicle.

Operate a straight truck, less than 1 1/2 tons, usually 4 wheels.

Operate a straight truck, 1 1/2 to 4 tons inclusive, usually 6 wheels.

Operates a manually controlled gasoline, electric or liquid propane gas powered forklift to transport goods and materials of all kinds within a warehouse, manufacturing plant, or other establishment.

Operate all heavy equipment (cranes, RTCH, etc)

Accurately complete and submit associated forms for travel clearances.

Submit data for periodic reports as required.

Be able to perform other duties as required by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements identified below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to satisfactorily meet the expectations of this job:

Must be able to operate a Personal Computer (PC) with a functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (primarily Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Windows graphical user interface) and Data/web based systems required for task area performing work.

Must have a working knowledge of Army rank structure and military unit relationships (e.g., Company, Battalion, Brigade, Division, etc).

Must be able to work under stressful conditions and be physically able to demonstrate the training/support tasks to standard.

Must have the appropriate qualifications, certification, and/or license under the requirements for the task area being performed under this contract prior to commencement of work.

Must able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check (NAC).

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, to include weekend, holidays, and some overtime.
Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one year experience operating cranes and 40-ton trucks with trailers. Must possess valid CDL specifying the certification on cranes. Must obtain and maintain a favorable National Agency Check. Must have a working knowledge of Army rank structure and military unit relationship. Must able to work a flexible schedule, to include weekend, holidays and overtime when required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience as identified above.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English. Ability to read, comprehend and explain instructions, letters, memos, emails and correspondence from inside the organization as well as from external sources. Ability to effectively respond, communicate and present information to senior management, contracting officials, clients and other employees in the organization.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to organize work, define and solve problems, establish and manage priorities, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions based on facts. Participate in prioritization of work and decision-making on allocation of resources. The incumbent must be able to analyze a situation analytically, evaluate the facts/data and formulate a plan of action.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid U.S. commercial drivers license, applicable for the type and class of vehicle being operated.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, kneel, bend, crawl, lie on back, and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties are primarily performed in under sheltered environment, or outdoors. However, duties may involve travel to off-site projects, motor pools, maintenance facilities, etc. for short periods of time.
