Structures Design Engineer (Entry-level or Associate)

The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) team is seeking an Entry-level or Associate Stru ctures Design Engineer (Tooling Engineer) located in El Segundo, CA. The selected candidate will be responsible for assisting in the development/maintenance of and modification of spacecraft structures/payload systems and component design. Competencies needed for this role include Adaptability, Collaboration, Communication, Customer Focus, Innovation and Engineering Judgment.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist with documentation of structural and payload system requirements to establish the primary structures system design and basic part analysis for satellite product lines including primary structures, deployable structures and antenna/feed/horn structures and assemblies

  • Assist with development, maintenance and modification of structures/payload system and component designs, using 3-D Computer Aided Design tools (PTC Creo, CreoView, Creo-Simulate), Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T ASME Y14.5M) standards and/or other design methods, to provide product definition to other engineering groups, production operations, suppliers and external customers throughout the product lifecycle

  • Assist with tests to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications

  • Assist with management of supplier development, test and production activities to optimize the design and achieve program goals

  • Assist in basic information search or development of a single aspect of a specific functional and physical requirements by reviewing previous designs/lessons learned, regulatory requirements, customer specifications, and/or contracts in order to support proposals, studies, and/or produce higher quality and more efficient detail designs

  • Assist in the preparation of preliminary design with layouts, sketches, preliminary strength analysis to support trade studies, develop structural technology, testing requirements, materials, processes, and tools, define interfaces

  • Actively seeks learning opportunities, participates in training, and studies Boeing processes and procedures to increase personal knowledge and understanding of project management

  • Prepare and document designs using accepted design practices to meet requirements and objectives in support of product certification and delivery, with direction

  • Under direct guidance, support the evaluation and resolution of production and service issues

  • Assist in refining the design configuration by following regulatory and company approved processes and procedures.

  • Support management of the engineering project by providing status and following the project plan

  • Assist in supporting proposal preparation and new business development efforts in order to grow the business. Tasks include: work statement estimates (e.g., cost, schedule, task breakdown) and marketing support.

  • Adhere to all bid and proposal policies and procedures

  • Assist in developing tools, techniques and products in response to gaps in technology road maps, and technology needs

  • Assist in creating plans, schedules, and procedures for tests of structural components and systems

  • Support testing (e.g. environmental simulations, functional and qualification tests)

  • Works under close supervision

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the El Segundo, CA, location.

This worksite participates in Boeings optional 9/80 schedule rotation. 9/80 is a rotation in which employees can work 9 hour shifts, 8 days per pay period (bi-weekly) and receive every other Friday off.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 1+ years of experience developing 3D CAD models and/or drawings

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering

  • 1+ years of experience using Creo

  • 1+ years of applied experience in developing and providing instruction of technical documentation and training material for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • 1+ years of experience with Platform Structures or Subsystems design, integration and/or analysis experience

  • 1+ years of experience working with cross-functional or cross-organizational teams to develop and/or support IT project plans and schedules

  • Experience working within a fast-paced team environment which required strong communication skills to frequently interact with Program Leadership, internal and external customer representatives and development team

Summary Pay Range for entry-level: $68,850 - $93,150

Summary Pay Range for associate: $80,750 - $109,250
