Description
Under administrative direction, to assist the Director of Maintenance, Operations, Facilities and Transportation in the operation of the maintenance and operations activities; to supervise and manage the school district's maintenance program; to give direction, coordinate work, and cross-train workers in the school district's operations program; to perform skilled work in all building trades, and to do related duties as required. This is a management position.
SUPERVISION:
The person in this classification is supervised by the Director of Maintenance, Operations, Facilities and Transportation. The person in this classification has supervision control of journeymen and senior maintenance workers; gives direction and coordinates work with the Grounds Supervisor; and cross-trains other maintenance employees.
Examples of Duties
Supervises and performs maintenance work in the repair, installation, and alteration of electrical equipment and wiring systems, carpentry work and structures, concrete/plaster and asphalt, heating/ventilation and refrigeration systems, and plumbing/valves/water piping, gas piping, locks/lockers/closers, panic devices, and welding;
Operates tools and equipment related to maintenance assignments;
Assists in the confirmation of maintenance worker assignments;
Diagrams work, contacts vendors, estimates costs, requisitions costs, makes assignments, and inspects;
Evaluates the need for present or future maintenance work;
Supervises repairs during emergencies and breakdowns;
gives direction and coordinates operations work for sprinkler systems, floor finishing, pest control, furniture repair, small equipment repair, carpet repair, and floor coverings;
Makes assignments and assists in the cross-training of maintenance workers for maintenance work;
Assigns maintenance workers as maintenance helpers;
Conducts in-service training programs;
Develops procedures for improving the quality of service;
Maintains records and prepares reports;
Maintains proper inventories of supplies and equipment;
Assists in maintaining budget control;
Participates in the selection of designated personnel; and
Participates in the performance appraisal of designated personnel.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:KNOWLEDGE OF:
Knowledge of basic methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction work;
Knowledge of rules, regulations, and operational procedures pertaining to the repair, maintenance, and construction of school buildings, machines, and equipment;
Knowledge of principles and methods of effective selection, supervision, and evaluation of maintenance and skilled trades personnel;
Knowledge of safe work methods and procedures
ABILITY TO:
Ability to communicate orally and in writing;
Ability to supervise personnel in the absence of the Director of Maintenance, Operations, Facilities and Transportation;
Ability to skillfully use and evaluate the use of a variety of tools and equipment used in a basic maintenance program;
Ability to make recommendations on selection, evaluation, and termination of personnel;
Ability to work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches;
ability to estimate costs and materials for construction and rehabilitation of school buildings;
Ability to maintain simple records and prepare meaningful reports as required;
Ability to provide in-service training to maintenance and operations staff as assigned;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls;
Ability to instruct and work cooperatively and effectively with others.
Typical Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by coursework or training in basic repair, maintenance, and/or construction.
Three years of progressively more responsible paid experience equivalent to journey level in basic repair, maintenance and/or construction and one year of supervisory experience, including the selection and evaluation of personnel.
