ELECTRICIAN I

Pay Range: $29.13 - $41.00

NATURE OF WORK

This is beginning level skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric wiring, instrumentation, and related electrical and electronic systems.

Work involves the performing of beginning level electrical and electronics work in making installations and repairs in connection with electrical systems and monitoring and control devices. Assignments are made in the form of written and oral instructions and, while initially closely supervised, performs work more independently with increasing experience. Work is performed in the Wastewater Treatment Plant and is subject to inspection in process and upon completion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, installs/maintains generators, meter control systems, variable frequency drives, data acquisition systems, programmable controllers, motor operated valves and circuit breakers (120-480 volts) working under hazardous conditions referring problems to an employee of a higher classification yet assuming more independence with increasing experience.
  • Reads and interprets plans and schematics and instruction manuals; programs variable frequency drives and inputs data; prepares required reports and documentation.
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of wiring, cable, and fiber optics for computer network, lighting systems, generator and turbine equipment and controls, circuit breakers, motors, instruments, intercom and TV camera systems, and other related equipment and systems.
  • Performs work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job and other duties as assigned.
  • Implements and follows the Lockout/Tagout safety program, assists in the development of procedures for specific equipment and works on related plant safety issues
  • Assists the maintenance workers as needed.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic systems, equipment, and control devices; knowledge of motor control systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
  • Ability to apply industry standards and safety practices.
  • Ability to locate and troubleshoot defects in electrical and electronic systems, equipment, and control devices, and to perform various adjustments and repairs.
  • Ability to prepare required reports, diagrams, and documentation.
  • Ability to supervise and lead others in the performance of tasks.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform relatively heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in use and care of tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
  • Ability to safely operate Power Industrial Vehicles (PIV) including but not limited to forklift, pallet jack, scissor lift, skid steer, and aerial lift devices.
  • Ability to learn and utilize various computer software programs necessary to perform the job.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Employees must be willing to be trained on and retain the knowledge to safely work in a complex electric generating plant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational courses in electricity or electronics; some experience in electrical work; or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employee must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver's License when operating a vehicle.
  • When operating equipment that falls under the Nebraska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) status, the employee is required to possess and maintain the proper license and endorsements as a mandatory condition of employment.
  • Possess an apprentice license or able to obtain. Journeyman license preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in an outdoor/indoor environment under varying weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below zero to above 100 degrees.
  • Some occasional exposure to fumes, high noise levels, chemicals, working at heights and in confined spaces, fall hazards, hazardous materials, dust, and paint.
  • Interaction with co-workers is an everyday occurrence and requires the ability to direct, negotiate, and mediate.
  • Work may involve lifting, climbing, and carrying of equipment and materials up to 40-60 lbs.
  • Work will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
