The Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Trades Specialist I (Plumber).

About the opportunity:

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor and/or Lead the incumbent is responsible for performing plumbing, pipe fitting and sprinkler duties as assigned. Required to perform journeyman level craftsmanship duties during both installation of new construction and general maintenance of existing facilities and research facilities as directed to include training or assisting with training and/or providing guidance to Maintenance Workers or other crafts as assigned.

What you'll do:

  • Fabricate, install and/or modifies in support for new renovation all distribution lines associated with HVAC, chilled water, steam, condensate, domestic water (hot and cold), distilled water, deionized water, reverse osmosis water, compressed air, vacuum, sanitary, drainage, sprinkler fire protection, gas, oxygen, Medical air, acid pumps, etc. in accordance with blue prints or code requirements.
  • Fabricate, install and/or modify all systems supporting research equipment, or renovation requiring distribution lines for various gases, water, air, etc. in accordance with blue prints, code requirements or equipment specifications.
  • Fabricate, install, and/or modifies various distribution lines requiring connections such as air conditioning units, refrigeration units, incubators, automatic air tables, dish washing machines, laundry equipment, MRI, Pet Scan, air handlers, medical equipment and air compressors in accordance with blue prints code requirements or equipment specifications.
  • Fabricate, install and/or modifies various connections, extensions or establish distribution pathways to meet stringent specifications related to renovation, code compliance, research specifications, etc. for fire protection sprinkler lines, connections or devices.
  • Maintains, repairs, and/or modifies all distribution lines associated with HVAC, Chilled water, steam, condensate, domestic water (hot and cold), distilled water, deionized water, reverse osmosis water, compressed air, vacuum, sanitary, drainage, sprinkler fire protection, gas, oxygen, Medical air, acid pumps, etc.
  • Maintains, repairs, tests, and/or modifies all systems supporting research equipment requiring distribution lines for various gases, water, air, etc.
  • Maintains, repairs, and/or modifies various distribution lines requiring connections such as air conditioning units, refrigeration units, incubators, automatic air tables, dish washing machines, laundry equipment, MRI, Pet Scan, air handlers, medical equipment and air compressors.
  • Maintains, repairs or install various connections to meet stringent specifications related to code compliance, research specifications, etc. for fire protection sprinkler lines, connections or devices.
  • Operates various equipment associated with the plumbing, pipe fitting and sprinkler trade such as threading machines, high pressure sprinkler connecting device, camera investigation equipment, etc.
  • Utilize various hand tools associated with the plumbing and pipe fitting trade.
  • Initiate the ordering of materials, assure workings areas are kept clean, and tools/materials/trash are properly stored.
  • Required to participate in training or assisting with training and/or providing guidance to Maintenance Workers or other crafts as assigned.
  • Assist other crafts as assigned.

Pay Grade: PG13

Hours: 7-3p

  • Must have high school diploma or GED
  • Must have one of the following:
  • 2 years experience in the maintenance and repair of piping and/or steam distribution system.
  • Completion of an associate degree in plumbing.
  • Completion of a 2 years accredited vocational plumbing program.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to be proficient in all aspects of plumbing, pipe fitting and sprinkler trade
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Ability to be confidential regarding medical information
  • Ability to participate in Medical Monitoring program
  • Must be able to work around human and animal research projects.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in written form
  • Ability at problem solving and investigation techniques for various equipment
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal building codes.
  • Ability to learn to operate a computer and associated software applications
  • Be proficient in operation of various shop equipment
  • Must be able to climb, lift, bend, stoop, crawl and carry
  • Ability to continue formal training as may be required for equipment, materials, pipe fitting, plumbing and sprinkler trade
  • Must have a broad knowledge of building trades
  • Must have good eye to hand coordination
  • Must be able to work around moving equipment
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a wide variety of work settings and changing environments.
  • Maintain proper attendance levels
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects of 50-75 pounds.
  • Knowledge of building trades methods and practices.

Physical Effort:

  • Will be required to perform physical exertion such as the lifting of heavy items up to 75 lbs., deep bending, climbing, crawling and/or working in difficult or cramped positions for long periods of time.
