Under the direction of the Plant Facility Manager, the Journeyman Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of electrical, telecommunications, and audio/visual systems throughout the Memorial Coliseum, Expo Center, and conference facilities. This role ensures the safe and efficient operation of infrastructure, including lighting, data and phone lines, fiber optics, emergency systems, and event-related A/V equipment. It supports both daily operations and large-scale events, requiring technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. The position may also assist with heating and cooling controls, snow removal, and other general maintenance tasks. This position is covered by due process as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Technology and Systems Installation

  • Installs, connects, and trains new employees on various custom software operating systems.
  • Installs and hardwires data, phone, and Audio/Visual (A/V) lines.
  • Provides installation and operational support for electrical, phone, internet, and A/V systems during events at the Expo Center, conference center, and arena.

Facility and Equipment Maintenance

  • Performs routine maintenance on electrical systems, boilers, lighting, theatrical equipment, A/V systems, cooking equipment, and catering equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs emergency systems, including audio systems, generators, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units, fire alarms, building security systems, and emergency lighting.
  • Manages maintenance of electrical equipment, A/V systems (including LED wall boards, ribbon boards, arena score/video board, and outdoor signs), and telecommunications equipment.
  • Assists the engineering group with heating and cooling controls and DC drives, as needed.
  • Performs snow removal as required.

Project Planning & Coordination

  • Assists the Plant Facility Manager in assessing and prioritizing projects.
  • Schedules labor to ensure task completion and adequate coverage across two shifts/seven days per week.
  • Estimates and procures materials needed to complete facility projects.

General Duties

  • Ensures compliance with applicable electrical and fire codes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including working overtime as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED, successful completion of an electrical apprentice program, and a minimum of five (5) years of experience as an electrician
  • Valid Journeyman Electrician License (preference given to candidates holding a Master Electrician License)

REQUIREMENTS - (Continued):

  • Valid Driver's License for operating equipment
  • Proficient in telecommunications and data wiring
  • Proficient in performing repairs and maintenance involving Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Capable of performing repairs and maintenance involving Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Skilled in utilizing electrical testing equipment, hand and power tools, fork trucks, aerial lifts, telecommunications and data test equipment, snow plows, and loaders

The Journeyman Electrician is expected to perform installations, maintenance, and repairs of electrical, telecommunications, and A/V systems safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes. The role requires independent work, strong problem-solving skills, and responsiveness to facility and event needs. Clear communication, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols are essential. Flexibility to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts is required.

RESPONSIBILITY:

The Journeyman Electrician is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation of electrical, telecommunications, and audio/visual systems across the Memorial Coliseum, Expo Center, and conference facilities. This includes installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting systems to support daily operations and event requirements. The role also involves maintaining emergency power and safety systems, coordinating with other departments and vendors, and assisting with project planning and general facility maintenance as needed.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

The Journeyman Electrician works closely with facility staff, supervisors, event coordinators, vendors, contractors, and other County departments to ensure the proper installation, operation, and support of electrical, telecommunications, and A/V systems. This role requires clear and professional communication to coordinate work, respond to service requests, and support event operations. The position also interacts with the general public during events and must maintain a courteous and service-oriented approach at all times.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The Journeyman Electrician works primarily in a large event facility environment, both indoors and outdoors, often under varying weather conditions. The role requires frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working at heights up to 150 feet, including on catwalks. The position involves lifting up to 40 pounds and pushing or pulling heavy equipment. Exposure to noise, dust, grease, slippery surfaces, and extreme temperatures is common. The electrician must remain alert, follow safety procedures at all times, and be capable of performing detailed inspections and equipment monitoring, including during extended or irregular hours such as nights, weekends, and on-call shifts.
