A person in this role will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, emergency response capabilities and wastewater expertise. This role offers an opportunity to prepare for positions like Operations Supervisor and Plant Manager.
About the Role:
The Wastewater Senior Operator in Charge (SOIC) role will serve as a key leader of a team of operators committed to reducing overflows and treating wastewater to meet the high King County standards demanded by the regulatory agencies. This person will have a crucial role in expanding and improving the King County CSO and collections systems, implementing state of the art treatment processes. The mission of the West Offsite directly affects the quality of life for King County residents and protects our watershed. Such an important role demands strong leadership and great teams.

Job Duties
What You Will Be Doing:
- The SOIC is the key field leader that mobilizes teams, assigns work and provides guidance to team members in overcoming challenges.
- The SOIC serves in a lead capacity to operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain Combined Sewer Overflow facilities, wastewater treatment facilities and odor control equipment and biological, chemical, mechanical, and hydraulic processes.
- Provide advanced level troubleshooting, problem-solving, coordination and decision-making when performing duties, particularly for Georgetown and Elliott West CSOs, be able to respond as the SME for unusual and/or emergency situations. Be on-call after hours for such situations.
- Operate, monitor, troubleshoot and maintain systems and processes in wastewater and stormwater facilities.
- Recommend and/or determine changes to the wastewater process to meet federal and Washington State permits and regulations and to optimize plant performance. Provide broad, in-depth on-the-job training to other wastewater operations staff.
- Planning, scheduling, coordinating, directing, monitoring, and reviewing a crew's daily work, assigned treatment process and/or special project. Incumbent's lead, train and provide technical expertise to operate, monitor and maintain wastewater treatment odor control equipment and/or the collection and conveyance systems and processes.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Qualifications You Bring:
- Knowledge of project management techniques and principles
- Advanced knowledge of how to manually start and stop equipment, systems and processes at all levels of control
- Advanced knowledge with operating, monitoring, maintaining and training on plant-wide gas, chlorination, heating, ventilating and air conditioning, odor control, electrical, water, air and hydraulic equipment and systems
- Advanced knowledge with operating, monitoring, maintaining and training on the equipment and systems in the preliminary treatment area, primary treatment area, secondary area and solids handling area, and in the collection and conveyance system
- Knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures
- Skill in the application of safety policies, procedures and practices for confined-space entry, fall protection, hazard communication, recognition and control, hazardous energy control, emergency response and evacuation, accident prevention, hearing conservation, back injury prevention, respiratory protection, fire safety, department facilities and operations, forklift training, overhead cranes, and plant-specific and department-wide safety information
Licensing, Certification and Other Requirements:
- Washington Group III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification from the Washington State Department of Ecology.
- Washington State Driver's License.

Working Conditions:
- Work Location: West Point Offsite - 2501 W Jameson St, Seattle, WA 98199, USA
- Work Schedule: Standard working hours are 40 hours per week. Applicants must be available to work any assigned schedule. This position is an hourly position governed by the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime-eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is represented by Local SEIU 925 (Wastewater Treatment Division).
- Duration: This recruitment aims to fill a Special Duty Assignment position for up to three (3) years in duration.
