DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a supervisory position in repairing and maintaining a

variety of automotive and related equipment and apparatus. The incumbent has responsibility for providing the necessary skilled personnel to various City departments who need Mechanics and Welders to repair and maintain a variety of motors, metal equipment and Parks Department facilities. The incumbent works under general direction in accordance with established guidelines and procedures and makes general work assignments to skilled Mechanics and Welders. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Supervises the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment such as trucks, passenger cars, bulldozers, power graders, snow loaders, tractors, air compressors, as well as police vehicles; Supervises the operation of machine shop equipment and the welding and repair of playground equipment, bridges, guardrails and other metal objects;

Inspects and supervises the inspection of motor equipment; Requisitions parts and supplies for the central garage;

Assists in the preparation of the section's annual budget needs and in specifications for new

equipment; Helps make out accident reports and schedules time for employees' vacations; Provides general direction and oversight on the development of subordinates in both skilled and semi-skilled work.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods along with the practices, terminology and tools of the trade; good knowledge in the repair of specialized mechanical equipment and hydraulic systems; working knowledge in the machinist trades used in the repair of automotive equipment such as welding, lathes and drill presses; ability to analyze mechanical and operating problems from test runs and from Motor Equipment Operators' written and oral reports on defective equipment; ability to supervise the work of highly skilled Mechanics and Welders; ability to develop subordinate skilled and unskilled employees; ability to prepare budget estimates and specifications for new equipment; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Promotion: Two years of permanent competitive class status as a General Equipment Mechanic.

Open Competitive: Three years of experience as an Automotive Mechanic in the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment including the rebuilding of gasoline and diesel engines, of which one year must have been in supervising two or more skilled Mechanics.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:

Eligibility for New York State Inspectors Certificate. Possession at time of appointment and must maintain the certificate during the entire length of appointment.

Eligibility for a Class B Driver's License and possession at time of appointment and must maintain the certificate during the entire length of appointment.

NOTE: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State recognized two year college with an

Associate's Degree in automotive mechanics can be substituted for one year of the non-supervisory experience.
