Job Summary Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in excavating and grading right-of-way for construction of projects, such as highways, streets, drainage ditches, and dams.Main Responsibilities
Measures distances from reference points to locate boundaries of construction site
Directs work crews engaging in operating vehicles and machines to dump, scrape, and spread dirt
Verifies curvature of graded surface, using hand level
Performs other duties as described under Supervisor
May supervise bituminous paving or concrete crews
May supervise work crew engaged in operating machines to tamp, roll, and smooth surface for subgrade of highway
May supervise workers engaged in laying drainage tile, concrete, and metal culverts
May be designated according to activity of workers
Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills Worker must be able to:
Apply and interpret principles of rational systems (bookkeeping, engines, electronics, building)
Solve particle problems
Deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Be competent in beginning algebra and geometry
Skilled in computation of discount, interest, profit, loss, commission, markup, selling price, ratio, proportion, percentage, surfaces, volumes, weights, and measures
Read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work
Physical Requirements Worker must be able to:
Exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
Walk and stand for a significant amount of time
Have pushing and pulling on arm or leg control for a significant amount of time
Work at a productive rate
