Purpose
The purpose of this classification under general supervision is to perform skilled installation, replacement, repair and maintenance of traffic signals and associated hardware for the City's traffic management functions. Employees in this class are responsible for participating in the maintenance of other related traffic control hardware and assist with street light maintenance duties. Assists with traffic management during special events and emergencies as directed.
Drug Screening
NOTE: This position (CDL required; and/or safety sensitive) requires a drug screen. If applicant did not receive drug screening upon initial hire with the City; the applicant will be required to submit to drug screening prior to accepting this position.
Education; Training and Experience
High School Diploma; GED; or acceptable equivalency diploma. Vocational/technical training in electricity or electronics technology; supplemented by three (3) years' skilled technical experience in the field of electrical wiring and maintenance or traffic signal maintenance or construction. Prefer applicant with Traffic Signal Technician Level 1 Certification through the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Obtain certification through the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician level "I" within three years of hire. Must possess and maintain valid State of Florida Driver's License. Must obtain State of Florida Commercial Driver's License "B" within six (6) months of hire.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Installs, repairs, replaces and/or provides preventive maintenance for traffic signals and associated hardware for the City (i.e. messenger cables, signal hangers, signal heads, signal conductors, electrical service signal bulbs, controller cabinets, signal controllers, signal monitors, vehicle detection devices, communications cable, optic fiber cables, video cameras).
Conducts pattern control pattern manipulations to assist with traffic management or special events as directed; responds to emergency call out.
Operates a variety of standard and specialized tools in performing essential tasks (i.e. meters, drills, fiber optic splicers, multi-meters soldering guns).
Operates a variety of equipment in performing essential tasks (i.e. gasoline powered generators, lift/bucket trucks, communications service monitors, controller simulation boards).
Assists with installation repair replacement and/or preventive maintenance of the municipal streets lighting system.
Maintains complete and accurate records concerning work orders work performed return of faulty equipment and components and materials and supplies utilized.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Performs Traffic Engineering Duties as required.

ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing stooping kneeling crouching and crawling and that may involve the lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to extremes in temperature and weather conditions dusts pollen electrical currents and/or traffic hazards.

The work performance of non-supervisory personnel of the City of Daytona Beach is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:
Knowledge of Job: Has considerable knowledge of the methods policies and procedures of the City of Daytona Beach as such pertain to the performance of the essential duties of a Traffic Signal Technician. Has thorough knowledge of principles of installation repair and maintenance of electronic traffic signaling devices and street lighting systems and the methods materials procedures and equipment required for effective and safe production. Has thorough knowledge of the laws ordinances standards and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Has considerable knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Clearly understands the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work. Has thorough knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used within the department as such pertain to work responsibilities. Knows how to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel as well as any external entities with which position interacts.
Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.
