Under general direction, performs skilled mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on automotive, heavy duty construction equipment, trucks, and power equipment.
Work Schedule: Tuesday through Friday 9:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Starting Salary Range: Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education and experience. (Salary reflects Step 1 and 6 of a 7-step pay scale for each position.)
- Mechanic II: $26.3074 - $33.5359 per hour.
- Mechanic III: $27.6493 - $35.2466 per hour.
- Mechanic IV: $29.0597 - $37.0445 per hour.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, computer controlled, and hydraulic problems in vehicles and equipment in order to identify and perform necessary repairs.
- Performs general overhaul and engine repair work on all City equipment and motor vehicles, including motor vehicles, with diesel, gasoline, water, or air-cooled engines.
- Performs adjustments and repairs to brakes, transmissions, hydraulic, electrical, ignition, and lighting systems, cooling and heating systems, and other vehicle and equipment systems.
- Performs occasional structural repairs and fabrications employing a variety of welding techniques.
- Performs occasional body and fender repair and painting, and glass replacement.
- Performs emergency mechanical repairs in shop and in the field, and troubleshoots malfunctions needing immediate repair.
- Provides assistance and information to co-workers regarding specialized work such as testing and repairing computerized electronic controls in automobiles and heavy equipment.
- Inspects, replaces parts, and performs adjustments to keep equipment in good working condition.
- Maintains written records of repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment.
Mechanic II - Qualifications and Skills:
- Two (2) years of specialized training beyond high school in the auto and truck repair and maintenance trades.
- Four (4) years of related experience, or equivalent.
- Possession of a Montana commercial driver's license, Class B, Type 2, with airbrake endorsement or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment.
- Must be forklift operator certified or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment.
- Must provide own tools adequate to perform job duties.
- Requires availability to respond to emergency callback, as necessary.
