Skilled work in the operation of single chassis trucks with a gross vehicle weight of between 17,000 and 32,000 pounds and other equipment used for construction and maintenance work. Performs manual work when not operating equipment.

Essential Job Functions

Operates single chassis trucks with gross vehicle weight of between 17,000 and 32,000 pounds.

Operates equipment such as steel wheeled rollers weighing less than 10 tons, tractor mounted grass and brush mowers, front loaders or hi-lifts with a bucket capacity of less than three cubic yards used for construction and maintenance work.

Performs manual work using hand tools when not operating trucks or equipment. This includes unloading trucks, cleaning culverts, erecting signs, repairing guiderails, and digging ditches.

Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance work on equipment and cleans and services equipment.

Performs emergency snow removal and weather related cleanup.

Other Duties

Demonstrates the operation of assigned equipment to other employees.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.)

Knowledge of

  • Practices applied to the care and safe operation of trucks with a gross vehicle weight between 17,000 and 32,000 pounds and construction and maintenance equipment utilized at this level.

Ability to

  • Develop skill in the operation of assigned equipment.

  • Perform related clerical tasks.

  • Use hand power tools safely and properly.

  • Perform varied road and highway maintenance tasks.

  • Follow oral and written instructions.

  • Deal effectively with the public.

Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted on a full-time year for year basis.)

Training and/or Education:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

Three years of progressively responsible road construction or highway maintenance experience, including operation of light construction equipment.

Licenses or Certificates:

Valid Class B commercial drivers license and a current Medical Examiners Certificate in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Special Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age.

Operation of County owned vehicle.

Subject to alcohol and drug testing.

Physical Demands:

Requires strenuous physical effort to perform manual work involving walking over rough, uneven terrain, repeated bending, climbing, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or lifting objects up to 100 pounds.

Unusual Demands:

Worker is exposed to dirt and soil, and hazards from road traffic and use of other construction equipment.

Subject to call in or to remain on the job for emergencies.

FLSA Status:

Nonexempt

Compensation Steps:

Pay rate: $21.39 - $24.53 per hour; $44,491 - $51,022 annually

Grade 803, full-time position, 40 hours per week
