DPW Operator- 2nd Shift

The DPW Operator is responsible for performing a variety of routine tasks around the maintenance, upkeep, and services of roadways and easements.

This position is Monday-Friday from 1pm-10pm. The salary advertised includes $1.75 shift differential and $1.50 Class A CDL .

2nd Shift DPW Operator without Class A CDL starting pay is $21.75 an hour (includes shift differential).

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Mows and maintains open space areas in the Town.
  2. Trims trees that have the potential to fall into the Towns roadways.
  3. Operates snow control equipment in the removal of snow and application of salt to Town Streets and properties.
  4. Operates leaf collection equipment in the removal of leaves.
  5. Repairs and replaces Town street signs, as needed.
  6. Assists in the patching and repair of potholes and cracks in Town streets.
  7. Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds, picks up litter from premises.
  8. Inspects streets, alleys, and structures for any deficiencies and determines the appropriate response to correct the problem.
  9. Plants trees, shrubs and flowers, and seeds grassy areas.
  10. Performs general construction tasks and building maintenance of Town-owned properties.
  11. Performs routine maintenance on all tools, power equipment, and vehicles.
  12. Performs other work in the workshop as directed by the DPW Manager.
  13. Assists other departments, as needed.
  14. 2 nd shift responsibilities include all other duties as assigned in the Utility and Storm Water Divisions.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is required.
  • The ability to use special tools to include: measuring tools, transit, laser level, welder, grinder, hand tools, acetylene torch, welder, backhoe, dump truck grader, roller, mowers, paint sprayer, sand blaster, weed sprayer, tractor, and chainsaw.
  • The ability to operate non-power tools to include: rakes, shovels, hammers, and brooms is required.
  • A working knowledge of the mechanics of equipment used to perform periodic maintenance, repairs, and adjustments is required.
  • The ability to operate all Street and Construction Department vehicles is required.
  • Must be able to accurately locate and mark underground assets for locate requests through Indiana 811.
  • The ability to be on call 24/7 or the ability to have a system in place that responses may be handled in an emergency situation is required.
  • The ability to adapt to work plans as they are affected by weather conditions in a timely manner in order to achieve quality results is required.
  • The ability to work in emergency situations to include: snow events, tree damage from storms, and signs down due to different situations is required.
  • The ability to maintain cooperative relationships with the Town officials and with the general public is required.
  • The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); working near moving mechanical parts; working in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; the risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.

While the offices of the DPW Department are usually open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also requires the ability to drive DPW Department vehicles. Thus, a valid drivers license is required.
