Position Purpose:

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of experienced shipfitters to learn the trade.
  • Assist in the layout, cutting, and preparation of materials (steel and aluminium).
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints and basic ship drawings
  • Support the fit-up of structural components in alignment with project specifications.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment, following safety protocols at all times.
  • Assist in using measuring devices such as tape measures and other hand tools.
  • Practice using power tools (grinders, saws, drills) under supervision.
  • Participate in problem solving discussions and learn to recognize fit-up issues.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and take direction from experienced fitters and foremen.

Qualifications / Skills / Experience

  • Must be 18 years of age (exceptions may be allowed for individuals 17 years of age if a high school graduate or have a GED).
  • Must have a high school diploma, or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency, or ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level.
  • Must be capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program.
  • Must be willing to learn and develop new skills in a dynamic, hands-on environment.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must have a strong work ethic, dependability, and teamworking skills.
  • Must have interest in a career in shipbuilding and marine construction.

Relationships

The Shipfitter Apprentice will be based in Bayou La Batre , Alabama and report directly to the structural foremen . Birdon Superintendents and managers may provide additional direction and duties from time to time.

Working Conditions

  • Position requires use of hand tools, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, stooping, climbing, listening, working in confined spaces, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Position requires ability to work in a shipbuilding environment.
  • Ability to lift packages, equipment, up to 50 lbs
