Independently prepares bid packages as well as all levels of budgeting from concept through final check set and analyzes subcontractor bids. Represents Batten & Shaw, Inc. in meetings with owners, architects and engineers, and contractors. Gathers, calculates and compiles data into all levels of estimates and bid proposals. Prepares routine estimates without supervision. Supervises less experienced members of estimating staff.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Acts as company representative and presents proposals to owners in order to sell Batten & Shaws services.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by division and corporate management.
  • Solicits, interviews and pre-qualifies subcontractors. Manages a database of qualified subcontractors capable of worksite completion. Chooses appropriate subs for projects, eliminates poorly qualified subs and manages process to necessary DBE goals.
  • Interfaces with subcontractors and suppliers to evaluate proposals relative to the scope of work.
  • Analyzes blueprints and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials and labor estimates.
  • Prepares estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors and for planning, organizing and scheduling work.
  • Budgets, estimates and prepares contracts for negotiated, select-bid and hard-bid projects.
  • Mentors and develops other members of the estimating staff.
  • Develops owner and subcontractor contacts.
  • Completes subcontractor buyout and turnover process.
  • Independently prepares proposals which meet quality standards, sets timelines and fee projections. Accurately scopes out length and difficulty of projects and related tasks.
  • Reconciles schematic drawings back to conceptual budget.
  • Establishes realistic and achievable construction duration.
  • Research local code and permit requirements.
  • Adheres to estimating policies and procedures.
  • Prepares value engineering as needed.
  • Must like working in a growing company environment and contributing to the growth of the company.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction and renovation of building structures.
  • Understanding of design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
  • Has the ability to develop business with new and existing Customers.
  • Willing to be a contributing member of a team of driven individuals.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledgeable of all commercial related building trades.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with the Microsoft suite of products.
  • Effective in presentations and effectively selling the company.
  • Ability to interpret quantitative and non-quantitative requirements from construction documents.
  • Ability to build and maintain client and subcontractor relationships.
  • Ability to work independently, to be self-directed and self-motivated.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Construction Sciences, Mechanical or Civil Engineering or related field and 2-5 years estimating experience or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
  • Experience in commercial and healthcare construction.
  • Experience in conceptual estimating.
  • Experience in both a negotiated and hard-bid environment.
  • Experience with Timberline or equivalent estimating software.
  • BIM experience preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to local and regional job-sites as needed.
