Purpose
This licensed Professional Electrical Engineer has significant experience with commercial and utility scale photovoltaic (PV) design. Perform all levels of electrical design and analysis for PV and energy storage projects.
Responsibilities
Leadership and Direction
- Receive broad guidance relating to overall key objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and general parameters for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially on highly complex assignments. Independently apply extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.
At the Operational and Company Level
- Establish new clients and enhance client relationships through efficient communication and design management.
- Represent project team in client communications and resolutions.
Do the Work
- Lead and participate in the design and development of electrical plan sets, including site layouts and equipment details.
- Responsible for more complex tasks and designs within project assignments.
- Perform final reviews and PE approval for PV and Energy Storage electrical designs.
- Lead and participate in design related consulting and PV system modeling.
- Oversee and supervise contractors and employees who are performing project tasks by providing technical support and guidance during execution.
- Learn and enhance plan-set templates, standards, and best practices.
- Design equipment layouts, installation details, and single-line diagrams (PV, MV, Auxiliary Power, etc.).
- Coordinate with design engineers and collaborate with sub-consultants.
- Interface with utilities and coordinate the design of interconnections.
- Identify issues on projects and collaborate with the client, co-workers, and others to execute effective solutions.
- Interact with team members, clients, vendors, installation contractors, and others to create efficient and cohesive designs.
- Generate Single Line Diagrams and interpret requirements for the utility interconnection application processes.
- Complete electrical calculations.
- Perform electrical studies including, but not limited to, AC short circuit calculations, DC short circuit calculations, AC arc flash, DC arc flash, load flow, grounding, ampacity studies, and protection device coordination using either SKM, ETAP, or similar software.
- Report the status of progress on each project to Senior Managers on a weekly or daily basis as needed.
- Appropriately request financial, legal and technical support as needed on projects to keep on schedule.
- Provide estimates of time to perform tasks.
- Apply broad knowledge of engineering principles and procedures.
- Oversee designs through project construction/completion.
- Communicate effectively with engineers, equipment manufacturers, and project stakeholders.
- Occasionally conduct field observation visits to accurately document the existing field conditions.
- Organize/prioritize multiple tasks to complete the design in a sequential efficient manner.
- Accurately produce the project construction documents to meet milestone schedules within a predetermined hourly budget.
- Attend coordination and design meetings, as needed.
- Attend weekly management meetings
- Define and determine project specifications.
- Address comments from clients, AHJ's & other review authorities; adjust designs accordingly.
- If directed, review all project related construction administrative items (shop drawings, RFI's, change order proposals).
- Work within established project budgets.
- Possess and continue to develop a working knowledge of all codes applicable to the discipline.
- Possess and continue to develop a working knowledge of AutoCAD software.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
- Five or more (5+) years of relevant experience in the Solar PV industry.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Medium voltage design and interconnection experience.
- Experience in the power systems industry working on substations, distribution and transmission systems, protection, and controls is highly desirable.
- Experience with PV system modeling software such as PVsyst, Helioscope and/or Homer is highly desirable.
- High level understanding of National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), IEEE standards, and other applicable codes. Knowledge of NERC and FERC requirements is highly desirable.
- Ability to perform shading analyses is highly desirable.
- Energy storage system design experience.
- Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner, and to act as a project leader of a PV design team.
- Must hold a NCEEES record or be willing to quickly establish one.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Proficient in AutoCAD.
