Under general supervision operates a variety of vehicles, light and heavy equipment, and specialized equipment utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities within the Public Works Department. Performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance of city streets and tree trimming.
- Operates a wheel loader, skid loader, street sweeper, asphalt spreader, high ranger, hydraulic log lifter, forklift, backhoe, front-end loader, and related equipment.
- Assists in repairs and fabricates and installs parts for chain link fences, guardrails, and other specialized items.
- Plows snow; salts streets and bridges as a lead worker in a plowing crew.
- Maintains street cleaning, plowing, snow removal, ice control.
- Performs various functions in street repair, including but not limited to, asphalt repair and replacement, crack filling, patching, paving, concrete and curb work, placing and removing traffic control devices and signs.
- Performs various ground maintenance duties such as tree and stump removal, planting and maintenance of new trees and shrubbery, brush chipping, fence and guardrail repair and installation.
- Operates a dump truck, pickup truck, packer truck, asphalt roller, air compressor and air tools, leaf vac, woodchipper, load-all, trailers, and related equipment.
- Performs work under bridges.
- Inspect equipment and monitor its performance, alerting supervisor of possible malfunctions. Reads procedural manuals on equipment to become familiar with capacity and methods. Perform cleaning and general maintenance of the equipment.
- Exercises proper safety precautions in the performance of work, including use of appropriate personal protective equipment, machine guards, work area warning materials, and safe work procedures. May direct traffic in work areas.
- May perform other duties seasonally.
- Takes action to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
- Participates in maintenance construction and laboring work as directed.

Experience :
- A minimum of two (2) years demonstrated ability to operate both light and heavy equipment, required.
- A minimum of two (2) years experience in the maintenance of road systems to include removal and installation of concrete and/or asphalt, preferred.
- Experience in the trimming and caring of trees preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Drivers License, Class A with air brake endorsement.
- Ability to operate required equipment to the satisfaction of supervisors.
- Knowledge of effective safety controls to protect pedestrians, motorists, and workers on the job site.
- Familiar with the City's street system.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public; ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions; ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
- Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment.
- May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, hazardous chemicals, and infectious diseases.
- Frequently stands, walks, talks, hears; sits, and drives; uses hands to handle objects; reaches with hands and arms; stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, climbs.
- May be required to climb ladders.
- Lifting 100 pounds, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
