While the offices of the Wastewater Treatment Department are usually open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also requires the ability to drive Wastewater Treatment Department vehicles. Thus, a valid drivers license is required.
The Wastewater Treatment Operator is responsible for providing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of the Towns wastewater treatment facilities and systems. Utilities Operator without licensure starting pay is $21.82 an hour. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Completes maintenance and inspection work on lift stations.
- Maintains storm and sewer lines using the combination sewer truck.
- Repairs and replaces castings and installs manholes and catch basins.
- Installs new sewer lines according to requirements and procedures specified by the Wastewater Treatment Crew Leader.
- Maintains equipment and vehicles to include: preventative maintenance, general repair work, and cleaning.
- Completes smoke and dye testing procedures and locates sewer lines.
- Performs building and lawn maintenance, as requested.
- In coordination with the Wastewater Treatment Crew Leader, ensures proper operations to maintain compliance with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit as issued by Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).
- Completes administrative duties to include: attending meetings, reviewing reports, completing various reports, answering inquiries, etc., as needed.
- Performs general building and grounds maintenance.
- Assists other departments, as needed.

- A working knowledge of laboratory testing and certification is required.
- A working knowledge of the chemical and physical processes involved in treatment is required.
- A working knowledge of the mechanical and hydraulic engineering principles involved in plant operation is required.
- The ability to detect flows in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial actions is required.
- A basic knowledge of modern water treatment is required.
- The ability to adapt and conform to shifting priorities and demands and execute accordingly.
- The ability to remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.
- The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
- The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.
