THE ROLE
This position is responsible for overseeing a Bridge Maintenance garage of various levels of Transportation Maintainers and Crew Leaders, under the direction of the Trans. General Supervisor (Bridge) in the repair and maintenance operations of various statewide infrastructure, and making on-site adjustments to projects as deemed necessary. This position will cover the duties of the Trans. General Supervisor (Bridge) as required. The Transportation Supervisor will be responsible for creating and presenting safety topics for quarterly safety meetings.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement on their application, or they will not be considered. Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the "tank endorsement" and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview, or they will not be considered.
- Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, respond to bridge emergency call outs throughout the year including nights, weekends, and based on operational needs, to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times, could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.
- Must be trained and can wear a Harness and possess fall protection training.
- Must follow the Department's Lead Health and Safety and Silica Safety Programs; (respirator physical, a current respirator fit test)

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK) In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for supervising the work of crews engaged in bridge maintenance. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Supervises rigging of staging, cleaning and painting of metal, replacement of bridge timber, building and demolition of temporary wooden structures, gunite repairs, pouring and surfacing of concrete, drilling of concrete on stone and driving or removal of rivets;
- Supervises electric or acetylene welding and cutting, repairs to gears, shafts, bearings and other mechanical parts of a drawbridge and other equipment used in bridge work;
- Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff;
- Provides staff training and assistance;
- Conducts performance evaluations;
- Determines priorities and plans crews work;
- Establishes and maintains crew procedures;
- Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards;
- Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
- Prepares reports and correspondence;
- Monitors use of equipment, materials, supplies and contractual services;
- Maintains cost records;
- Maintains necessary precautions for safety of employees and the public;
- Supervises snow and ice work;
- Requisitions supplies and materials;
- Performs related duties as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in Bridge Maintenance operations to include carpentry, masonry, structural repairs, and working with heights
- Experience leading and providing direction to a work crew
- Experience in an acting capacity as a Trans. Supervisor (Bridge)
- Experience with the Departments Bridge Repair Units (BRU) and Construction Contracts, and the ability to interpret the contracts
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and design plans
- Experience with computer applications such as CORE, STARS, Bentley and Microsoft (Outlook, Excel, Power Point, SharePoint)
- Experience with adherence and enforcement to department policies and procedures
- Incumbents in this class will be required to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required.
- Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory, acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
- A physical examination may be required.
