Description

This is skilled work in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment, with some supervisory work. Occasional manual labor is required and performed as needed.

Examples of Duties

Operates Equipment

Operates dump truck, backhoe, front end loader, bulldozer,

grader, bush hogs, tractors and other various equipment. Operates gas powered weed eater, pruners, chain saws and other small equipment. May set up and operate flood pumps. Must have manual dexterity to climb into and out of truck or equipment cab.

General Maintenance

Performs manual tasks and all other general maintenance duties to meet needs of the department.

Supervision

Supervises and trains crews (may include inmates) in the safe operation of equipment and proper procedures. Maintains daily work records and timesheets accurately, and reports materials used accurately.

Training

Willingly participates in equipment training programs.

Emergency Response

Required to report to work if an emergency situation exists to protect, prevent, repair or minimize damage.

Residency Requirement

This is required stand-by position. Employee must, within one year of date of hire or promotion to this position, reside within 45 minutes of the assigned work facility.

Support

Provides support for department special events before, during and after the event in the areas and for functions relative to essential job duties and/or otherwise assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED required. Must have a minimum of three years' experience in the operation of heavy-duty equipment including one-year supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Must possess a valid Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with air brake certification and a Florida Class "A" Commercial Driver's Permit with air brake certification before the hire date. A Florida Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with air brake certification is required and must be obtained within six months of the date of hire or promotion.

Training Programs

The City is committed to provide training programs for all departments and all positions. Risk Management conducts classes in Defensive Driving, Safety, and Insurance. With rare exceptions, classes are offered during working hours, and are open to all eligible employees.
