Nature of Work
Civil Engineering Technicians are responsible for performing limited design work, field surveying, AutoCAD drafting, and inspection work on various City infrastructure projects. Work is performed under the general direction of the Development Review Coordinator and Civil Engineering Superintendent.
Essential Functions of Work
- Conducts field surveys to collect data to include in the design and specifications of projects.
- Inspects new utilities and street construction projects being conducted by private developers and as a part of public infrastructure improvements.
- Prepares "As-Built" information from public utility inspection notes and generates "As-Built" drawings utilizing
- Inspects sub grade and base materials on street construction and checks final grading to ensure proper grading prior to the installation of curb, gutter and asphalt pavement.
- Conducts tests on gravel, concrete and asphalt to ensure compliance with specifications and mix designs.
- Inspects sewer services and generates "As-Built" drawings for future reference and performs inspections for sidewalk, driveway, and curb and gutter for property owners to ensure compliance with City standards.
- Provides information and investigates complaints from builders, contractors, and the general public regarding codes, ordinances, specifications, plans, and cost estimates.
Education and Experience
- Combination of education and experience equivalent to two years of college level civil engineering coursework or; two years of vocational training in engineering, inspection technology, surveying and drafting.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification in asphalt and concrete testing within one year.
- Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana driver's license

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does not supervise staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to cold, heat, noise, dust, confining workspace, mechanical hazards and electrical hazards. Employee also works in an office environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, reach, crawl, climb, kneel, ride, grasp, push, pull and perform similar body movements; must have the ability to perform heavy physical work and to lift and carry up to 75 pounds at a time; possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to use a personal computer, survey instruments and hand tools and to operate a motor vehicle; ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read and understand contract documents, instructions, blueprints and inspect facilities.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed Monday through Friday. This position is a non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
