Performs skilled trades and work in the operation of heavy equipment used in the Solid Waste Department, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under minimal supervision of the Landfill Supervisor.

- Operates heavy equipment to haul, push and compact garbage.
- Hauls dirt to the landfill and spreads it over compacted garbage.
- Grades slopes, builds berms, and prepares areas for seeding; performs erosion control.
- Makes minor repairs around the landfill, as needed.
- Performs pre-shift inspections, service, and general equipment maintenance on all heavy equipment operated by the Solid Waste Department; keeps records on all maintenance performed.
- Applies alternative daily cover as needed using posi-shell applicator. .
- Provides assistance to Landfill customers as needed.
- Operates and loads shredder with various materials in a safe and efficient manner
- Operates in a heavy, commercial type environment
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
- Performs related tasks as required.
General knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating and servicing motorized vehicles and equipment; general knowledge of the rules and regulations on proper landfill procedures; general knowledge of the traffic law and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper equipment operation; some knowledge of geography and soil characteristics; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and construction equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in operation of heavy equipment, such as bulldozer, compactors and excavators or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Required to obtain Landfill Operator certification through SWANA within six months of hire. Bilingual preferred but not required.
A valid driver's license.
Recommend a valid North Carolina class A or class B commercial driver's license or out of state equivalent.
